Anthea Turner Instagram – You might have heard me discussing Osteoporosis and why early detection is vital. Knowledge is power; the sooner we know our T-Score, the better our chances of avoiding needless fractures, which can cause massive inconvenience, sometimes death, and costs the NHS £4.6 billion annually.
In 2009, I had a DEXA Test (an X-ray that measures bone strength) during a check-up for Hell’s Kitchen. As an active woman in my late 40s, I was shocked to learn I had osteopenia, the precursor to osteoporosis. My doctor wasn’t concerned, giving me basic lifestyle advice and calcium tablets, without mentioning menopause’s impact on bones.
Discovering my condition early, I’ve worked to keep ‘The Bone Eating Monster’ at bay. I see my bones as a bank storing calcium and phosphorus, crucial for bone strength and overall health. Without healthy deposits through diet, supplements, and exercise, my bone health would decline.
Bone density scores range from a healthy 1 to a fragile -4. In 2018, mine was -2.3, and now it’s -1.8. My goal is 0.0. Recently, I tried a new bone diagnostic machine at @mayfairhealth with Sports Therapist Paul McGee @profortis_sports_therapy . The @echolightspa machine is radiation-free, portable, and patient-friendly, providing the same reading as my recent DEXA scan, plus a Fragility Score.
Our bones are tough outside with a spongy honeycomb structure inside (the trabecula). If this depletes, bones are more likely to fracture. My trabecula is in good condition, so my fracture risk in the next five years is low, between 5-10%. Early diagnosis and efforts with diet and exercise seem effective.
I’m impressed with this machine’s accuracy and ease of use, which can help expand diagnosis nationwide. I’ll discuss the Biodensity osteogenic loading machine by Power Plate in another post. Thanks to @GaryRhodes360, @londonosteoporosisclinic Dr. Tater Mahmud, @hum2n Dr. Mohamed Enayat, and Simon Gilchrist for promoting health.
