Cristina Zenato Instagram – Of the most known species of sharks, nurse might be the one with the most sightings and interactions with divers, swimmers and snorkelers.
Rated as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List, they are at times underrated as a shark sighting and even more dangerously labeled with anthropomorphic interpretation of their nature as “docile.”
While nurse sharks scavenge, eat small crustaceans, fish and mollusks, and they pose little direct threat to humans, they are still wild animals who deserve our attention and precaution when in the water with them. Their mouths are designed to inhale with incredible force their food and to grind it and crash it.
They spend a great quantity of time on the ocean floor, resting under coral heads and in the shallows; they tend to move when approached too fast and with intent, but they demonstrate an incredible ability of associative thoughts.
As someone interested in shark behavior, they fascinate me with their capability of making connections beyond their sensory system and being able to recognize shapes and forms.
