Shark vision is another one of those misunderstood topics.
While I can’t address the vision of all species of sharks in one post let’s review a few facts:
1. Shark’s eyes function like human eyes and can expand and contract due to lack or presence of light
2. They have night vision thanks to a coating at the back of the eye called Tapetum Lucidum (shining carpet)
3. Having good vision doesn’t help in bad visibility, so yes, dusk, dawn, murky water and other factors affecting visibility also affect the sharks swimming in those area
4. Some sharks can see a few shades of colors; depending on where they live some species have cone cells in their eyes
5. Depending on the position of the eyes on the head, some deal with a bigger or smaller blind spot in front of their head
Ultimately, one size does not fit all and we need to learn and appreciate each one for their special characteristics.
