The diver’s capability of maintaining a specific position in the water, be it at the surface before or after a dive or during the dive itself, keeping a certain depth.
Mastering buoyancy is a fundamental skill in scuba diving, and it’s essential that these skills are honed during the initial open water course, without the need for additional classes.
After the original pool training, all my open water students complete their open water skills while swimming, never on their knees, preparing them for different situations, be it drift, walls, deep blue without references, or solid bottom.
Regrettably, many divers find that their buoyancy skills need further refinement after their introductory open water course, making additional classes a needed option.
For me and my students, mastering buoyancy is a pivotal learning moment in scuba diving.
Mastery learning is about performing a task or skill comfortably, fluidly, and repeatedly. It’s not about ticking a box and moving on but about continuous practice for a more positive outcome. This kind of learning leads to the development of “trained instincts.”
“Trained instincts” is the capability of reacting to a situation, sometimes but not always adverse, in the correct manner for a positive outcome, as if that reaction is part of our genetic code; if the diver followed the natural instincts, the result could be incorrect, damaging, or at times fatal.
I always say, “There are no walls or bottoms in the ocean.”
Learning to manage our position related to the water column creates a comfortable and more relaxed diver who is attentive to their surroundings, including their buddy and dive guide. It allows for the development of the following skill: Global Awareness. I will address this concept in my post tomorrow.
