We didn’t even need to know the names of the two men in the 1500 freestyle to feel the thrill of the chase, Bobby Finke digging down to true grit to hold off Gregorio Paltriniari.
We didn’t need to know the long champion history of Novak Djokovic to witness the emotion of his at long last capturing the gold in men’s tennis. He never cried that hard when he won Wimbledon or any of his 24 Grand Slam titles.
How about the dominance and joy of both Simone Biles and Katie Lendecky? We have the privilege of watching two superior athletes of their generation. Speaking of best in a generation, we are going to see Leon Marchand’s poetry in the water for a long time. Wasn’t it moving to see Macron cheering him on…and the French crowd rising in loud collective voice each time he took a breath in the breaststroke?
Wasn’t Shot putter Ryan Crouser made of some Viking stuff? Each athlete so obviously carved by the work and practice they’ve put in over the last decade. And now the showcase track & field athletes take center stage, reminiscent of the ancient Greeks. Do you agree that these Paris Olympics come at a particularly good time for the collective spirit of the world? How moving to see the Ukrainian athletes in their pursuit of excellence, away from their desperate war.
