Emily Bett Rickards Instagram – When we arrived at our hostel in Port Hardy we were told that if we could avoid the first two days, we should. Lots of “blow downs” meaning fallen trees and mud so thick it would remind us why quicksand was a big fear at the age of 5.
It’s true, the North Coast Trail was harder than we expected. Miranda’s legs came home fully bruised, Riley’s guitar case in a garbage bag, JL’s boots drenched, and Tom… well Tom ran out of food a day early.
It’s also true that the NCT is beyond incredible. It’s covered in bears, expansive coastline, and tide pools that help you with your questions of existence. It redefined my sense of time and how I want to be spending it. It reminded me there’s life all around us and that I’m really f***ing fortunate to have a group of pals that say yes whenever I ask them to go off grid, into wolf country and more likely than not, go to sleep wet for multiple wave serenaded sleeps.
It’s hard to put this one into words but we were already talking about visiting again when we were driving home so that says it all.
Consider this NCT pt.1 and please share your hiking must haves!
