Emily Swallow Instagram – Let’s roll a Nat 20 and eliminate cancer!
I met Blair Driedger of Adventure Dice earlier this year while trying to decide between 11 or 12 different sets of BEAUTIFUL dice (we can all use just one more set, right?).
As I ogled all the pretty designs, Blair said his wife is usually with him but was resting after her most recent cancer treatment. I’mam no longer surprised when a convention conversation turns to cancer; we are all affected by it in some way. But what we choose to DO with such a daunting diagnosis is the #thisisthwaywednesday testament I’m uncovering again and again.
Andrea and Blair’s story proves that our challenges cannot snuff out our joy and the gifts we have to offer. Their love of TRRPG inspired them to start @adventuredice to create a safe and welcoming space for anyone and everyone who wants to game. That same year, they started fundraising for the @cancersociety, joining the Relay for Life as “Andrea’s Adventurers.” Then, in 2021, Blair and Andrea combined their desire to spread their love of TTRPG with their desire to fund a cure for cancer, and organized an epic weekend of games designed to fundraise.

Can I brag on Andrea and Blair just a little more? I have to, because although the challenges of cancer treatment/running a small business/raising a baby have left then tired and depleted, the joy on their faces at conventions and the encouragement they give others are palpable. Friends, #thisistheway to lift up both friends and strangers, hold on to that sense of childlike play and create spaces where it’s ok to share in our mutual struggles without letting them define us.
