Jemima Kirke Instagram – As Ann Margret’s stunt double, Gladys did a lot of killing time on set. So did Roy, an ambitious PA with a passion for filmmaking. They’ve been flirting since day one of shooting. Roy would lament that Gladys wasn’t a star in her own right which made her feel good and shy. He loved to explain the mechanics behind her favorite movies. He’d even make some things up but Gladys didn’t know that and probably wouldn’t have cared. She enjoyed practicing her cockney accent for him and impressing him with her flexibility, putting her legs behind her head and doing splits.
On one particularly long shoot day, they snuck into Ms. Margret’s dressing room. Giddy with fatigue, their egos locked in an embrace, they just about stumbled through the door. Gladys threw herself on the sofa, her legs shooting up in the air like a girl from a magazine.
Roy picked up a Polaroid camera from the vanity. He wanted to capture it. Her, a strange and faraway planet. Turning and twinkling because she perceived him as the man he longed to be. “Baby,” Roy held the camera to his face. “I know a star when I see one.”
