The aforementioned project is BBC’s latest crime thriller, The Jetty. Unlike your familiar back alley, car chase, trench coat sort of series, this four-part story, written by Cat Jones, manages to bring a new, more humane depth to the genre, cramming sexual consent, coming-of-age and grief all within the first 60 minutes.
In the series, Jones provokes questions and analysis from the audience, making you look back and assess the grey areas found in all our collective memories. Playing the role of detective Ember Manning wasn’t so black-and-white for the English actor. “You’ve got this really interesting tension, this push and pull. The more information she knows, the less she knows about herself,” she explains. “It’s as much a human drama as it is a detective drama.”
With a career spanning 20 years in film and television, from Emmerdale to Victoria, to The Serpent and Wilderness, Coleman has been transfixed with transformation. Now she finds herself in a rare space ready to break away from the “really intrepid characters that are very internalised … I’ve got this urge to be really kind of fiery and impulsive, and really emotionally immediate”.
Adding an innovative approach to the crime genre is only a start. What’s next is anyone’s bet, but it will likely be another exceptional display of the actor’s range.
