Norah O’Donnell Instagram – On August 26, 1920, the 19th Amendment was officially adopted, and women were given the constitutional right to vote. It was a landmark moment in our history — but it took a long fight, and decades later, for women of color to be able to exercise that same right, with the passage of the Voting Rights Act of 1965.
The 19th Amendment says, “The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of sex.”
We were privileged to hold the 19th Amendment when we visited the National Archives for an upcoming @60minutes piece.
