I often shuffle between being low on energy and being hyperactive. Some days I feel like the queen of getting things done, and other days I feel like I can’t even move a finger. It’s a constant struggle because I never know what tiny little reason—or absolutely no reason at all—will make me shift from one state to the other. For almost eight years, my day started with me rushing to make it to the gym on time, and then my actual day would begin with that post-workout happy feeling. But on days when I was jittery, even that didn’t help me center myself. Over the last two years, thanks to being unwell or low most days, I took a long break from working out. I missed feeling fit, but the constant low energy made getting back into working out even tougher. However, through all of this, I discovered what having a slow, mindful morning can do for someone like me. My therapist suggested that I start my day by sitting with myself and journaling. I must admit, the journaling didn’t always happen, but starting the day slowly has changed so much for me. It helps me feel centered throughout the day. I still have my hyperactive and low days, but I feel more grounded, and I’m better at accepting and dealing with those ups and downs. As I slowly get back into working out, I’m making an effort to wake up a little earlier to enjoy my slow mornings before exercising.
