Sarayu Blue Instagram – I owe an enormous and heartfelt thank you to so many casting directors. The best casting directors out there care so deeply, and set us up to do the best work we can, whether we get the job or not. When I first entered this industry roles for South Asians were few and far between, and my “look” was one people didn’t quite know what to do with. I have so many stories, but I’ll never forget, it was because of a casting director who believed in me, and pushed hard for me, I booked a romantic guest lead in an episode. And let me tell you, that was innovative then. If I had a nickel for every time I heard I wasn’t attractive enough 🙄, I could have retired by now. Ok maybe not. 😂 (And make no mistake, I feel great about myself.) But my point is, that casting director shifted the way people saw me enough for me to get that love-interest role. And that CD continued to champion me, brought me in multiple times, and cared about every actor they brought in.
Our fellow casting directors are headed into negotiations next week to fight for fair pay and fair contracts. Casting directors play an enormous part in finding actors, creating opportunities for talented people who might not have otherwise been considered, helping actors do their best work, and building a world of characters we so often love, hate or love to hate. I support casting directors wholeheartedly and am eternally thankful for so many of you, who have often guided me to the best work I could give.
May these negotiations bring you the equitable pay and contracts you so deserve.
