According to the Bhagavad Purana, Krishna is the epitome of love and thus asks for the devotee’s complete surrender to him. A surrender that is unconditional, that doesn’t ask but just loves. And it is believed that once a devotee can achieve that surrender onto him, Krishna becomes a devotee to them just as much. Thus the lines, “Kon kehte hain bhagwaan aate nahi, tum Meera ke jaise bulate nahi”. It is this idea that gives birth to Bhakti in terms of poetry and art with Sant Surdas and his contemporaries in the 15th century.
It is this idea that the Leela of the ghat is, also, meant to show. The natkhat Krishna, stealing the gopis’ clothes, leading to negotiations, anger, and praying from the gopis, before he himself jumps into the water too. The playfulness holds deeper meanings of complete surrender, of appearing before the divine in unrestricted vulnerability, and of seeing angry words as an exchange of love, too.
The Chiri Ghat of Brindavan is believed to be the very place where Krishna and the gopis would indulge in this pastime.
