I remember when we opened @rootssouthtable and the media called us a soul food restaurant I was not happy with the classification.
One soul food and southern cuisine are same but different. When you say soul food to me it’s the food my grandmother and aunties cook. Roots wasn’t just my grandmother food. I also didn’t want to set expectation that certain dishes would be on the menu because many are not like Mac n cheese.
So what is the difference between Southern and Soul Food cuisine you might ask?
While not all Southern food is considered soul food, all soul food is definitely Southern.
Soul food is an ethnic cuisine traditionally prepared and eaten by African-Americans in the Southern United States meaning the south. Obviously we have all migrated to different parts of the world bringing our traditions with us.
Roots was created to honor my roots but also to expand on that and celebrate the land and water of the south.
Now I say call us whatever you want!!
We are the south making food from our soul!! We will take all our awards!!
