Triona McCarthy Instagram – “What was I made for?” as Billie Eilish sings here, but something I was thinking about today when watching this footage of myself walking the red carpet for @armanibeauty at Venice Film Festival.
You have to remember I grew up devouring every fashion magazine I could get my hands on in West Cork & drooled over every red carpet & runway where it seemed a young, rail thin canvas was favoured for fashion’s greatest creations.
However, I’d like to think that from the very beginning of my career, I’ve tried to do my bit to change the landscape of what is considered “beautiful”.
I’ve always said that I wrote a beauty column because “I’m not a
model” but rather a real woman with real spots & cellulite & 25 years later, real wrinkles, so I, eh, really need all those lotions & potions of my devotions!
I’ve flown the flag in fashion for how style has nothing to do with size & women can be empowered by the art of the outfit, not obsessed by the shape of the body wearing it.
The industry it seems has always preferred that we don’t see ourselves reflected in magazines or nowadays online but rather see what we can never be & so we’re disappointed in ourselves as a result, eventhough the majority of western women now wear a size 16 or more.
So the joy I feel when a brand like Armani wants to work with a woman like me who’s not only a size 14 but 50 years old-numbers usually far too big for the others.
I’ll finish now by saying how sometimes it seems as Billie Eilish sings, I feel …the need to remind us all that sometimes, we CAN do, something we’re not made for!
AND, if getting older scares you, I am here to tell you, 50 is just another F word & so F it, I’ve decided that I will not let age change me, but I will change the way I age.
