Caption : VOTING..a MUST do, especially this Tuesday, Nov 5th. I made sure to vote early. I wanted to be one of the women who stepped early, so that was my Halloween moment, pushing the energy forward. Those moments mentioned above in history were just that and similar rules and laws could be tomorrow. Power of our voices and the importance of voting in a world that often tries to silence us. Casting our ballots is a power act of defiance and self affirmation. I would say in the past “It just matters that you vote.” But this election has enormous weight that could reverse the progressive road that this country has been on. Roe vs Wade could be just the beginning. Legality is a matter of Power, NOT Justice. Great statement. So please VOTE intentionally.Likes : 40647

Caption : After watching the Presidential debate last night…I was glad I had something to focus on the next day. Me ! It’s my birthday 🎂💃🏿 And what a year it’s been, as we all have witnessed and are living with. With the unfortunate things that have happened in our country and in our world, there were some rays of light. I remain someone who is still here to improve my world and continue to help others succeed. My good health and compassion seems to be often rewarded. In July Gucci asked me step up my responsibilities to Executive Advisor Global Equity and Culture Engagement reporting to the global ceo, Marco Bizzarri. I was surprised and then again not. I nervously accepted, asking “what exactly is expected of me?” “Just be you as you have been, nothing more. I won’t asked you to do 8hrs a day, or report daily” he answered. I adjusted my concern and remembered my earthly purpose. Educate and help others to achieve. No matter. Lucky me, I like the ethics and those who oversee the brand. I continue to be blessed. For all of you and those I know personally that respect and support me as “I push the boat ashore”, grateful I remain, for still having a good mind and energy to give. I have seen and done so much along the way. Then being in that Gucci promotion in March, September ‘20 Interview Mag with Zendaya and Italian Vogue 100 cover, makes me smile in this seventh decade of life. And it’s all because of you that allows me to be. I ask all to stay the course, and VOTE no matter the debates. #designershub #cfda #gucci #diversitycoalition #balancediversity @kadeemhardison @blackgirlscoalition. Thank you 🙏🏾Likes : 18025

Caption : Salaam to all…it’s been quite sometime and finding the time to sit steady and share. As most of you know, I was developing the documentary “Invisible Beauty” in recent years and then last year in 2023, we were successfully sharing it with the world, which demanded my amazing energy which I gave. It was full on. This year is active but not like 2023, we have space to add other creative breaths. And mine was back to my Moroccan hideout and do just that hide, sleep and be lazy for a month with the support of my dearest. I appreciate the loneliness of time drifting with no social commitments. Only to look forward to a late evening scooter ride to change the mood and sit in an eatery. But most dining was within our dwelling. A month of much needed rest and self kindness. 5 days after my blissful sojourn, I returned home to go to the hospital for a full knee replacement. It was planned. Another reason to rest while away as I knew what I was returning to and I was sure to prepare the body further by everyday twice a day I did prehab exercises. Thinking I had to go in “gangsta and come out gangsta”. That be me. I am now in recovery since July 11th. It’s been a journey…and challenging at times. No matter how quickly I progressed after surgery and bared little pain…the recovery is something to write home about. The healing process is not so quick. The knee is not like the hip. Thank goodness I have good hips. The image above is the elegance, posture and stance that I long to acquire again, as I have been losing along the way. That’s my simple objective, for now. I may get busy being and doing other things, but that is the objective. “Invisible Beauty” is still in motion. More schools, colleges, universities screenings coming up this fall and into 2025. The energy required to do more then nothing is a lot. Love being focused on self. 🙏🏾 @invisiblebeautyfilm #invisiblebeautyfilm @rakanrugsobjects @frederic.tcheng Thank you @hatteristLikes : 14368

Caption : Slowly catching up to the British Vogue feature editorial celebration. Edward @edward_enninful told me “you are loved”. While I was basking in my glory, waiting to receive the BV images, I was working on my documentary (will share that later). But this supportive audience was so appreciative of me being recognized in this way your love was outpouring. Close allies were re-posting so fast and the comments, were hundreds. I was trying to keep up. But here I am to say how proud I am of this feature commissioned by the EIC of BV. It was a special shoot because I was asked to choose all of the production team except the editor/stylist Dena @denagia. I chose the Photograper @sharifhamza, makeup @porschefabulous, hair @edrisjustedris, and the writer @joanmorgan. I knew all except the Photograper Sharif who was an assistant of Steven Klein for 5 years. Once I learned that, I wanted us to meet and I decided. Unique moment because it was all our first time working with British Vogue. We went in as “new bees” and had a spiritual and joyful day. One of the comments on a post …said “it was about time recognizing Ms Bethann in this way. Finally”. I thought, I have been recognized often. But on second thought, not like this. It is important and social media responded, and rightfully so. No matter who you are, if you do good, beyond yourself and live long enough to tell a tale or two, things happen. These images are three of six, and I especially like that tag line “Mother of Industry”…it’s undeniable. It seems to be the way I have rolled. Thank you British Vogue, Edward. Sarah, Dena, Sharif, Porsche, Edris, Joan. Just to say it’s was an exceptional experience from the COVID testing, the fitting, the shoot day, entire production, the head wraps and hat tilts all created and controlled by the genius styling of Dena G. All by GUCCI. All and all a very special experience, never to be forgotten.Likes : 12535

Caption : Well here we go… If you dare to dream things can happen. Just be comfortable with what you want because you need to be ready to let the “shoe fit”. I am overwhelmed and overjoyed by the reality that “Invisible Beauty” is having its theatrical release at the art cinema Film Forum in New York. I always appreciate what films they choose to screen and then for our film to be distributed by Magnolia Pictures. Many years ago I longed for the idea of being distributed by Magnolia. Again, their choice of films to partner with that has built their reputation that has brought them respect from film lovers. So here I am. Everything is a lot. Yet it’s what I worked to achieve. Truth is I don’t have enough suave to handle all gracefully. The story, the film, trailer and poster, the focus is on me. Being the subject of the film became easier after the Sundance FF premiere, and I give credit to the audiences. It took some getting use to but I have. You made a movie about yourself best you get use to it. But as someone told me when the trailer debut this week and I confessed to being a bit uptight, “learn to lean into it cause it’s happening” All and all I am happy because of all I mentioned prior. Without it there would be nothing to share. Blessed to have had a marvelous human and talented co-director, Frédéric Tcheng and our producer Lisa Cortes, who is exceptional at what she does. She held us down. And our co-producer Paul Dallas who was the cool seeker of archival footage. All to say nothing good comes easy. In the end I am happy because the audiences are happy. And I am proud we created a wonderful story to share. We open Sept 15th NY Sept 22nd LA/Chicago Sept 25th D.C. Sept 29th open wide See you at the movies !!!! @invisiblebeautyfilmLikes : 12529

Caption : What a week… As we close down the year and surely many are thinking “what a year”! For me this was the year that allowed me to know more about myself and how I am still determined. Where most are retiring for sure by this age, I find that life continues to present a new wave to surf. Like many, I wondered about my finances, which, where and how ? Not truly until this year did I really take to heart and mind what my dear Iman @the_real_iman said to me many years ago, that “you are relevant”. I tried to say, “so were certain other people” she would clarify the difference. With all that I have achieved, I never gave myself too much credit. I was busy just changing the world around me, because that was my revolutionary calling. Grateful I am also to @naomi who would not allow me to lay back too long, as she would call me to arms. She knew I would persevere. She knew to help save our industry and the models of color that a significant respected disruptor was needed. That be me..”Ma, you need to come back it’s bad”. She was my eyes. Blessed them both because, when I stepped up, they stood strong. Success was had. This year, recognition and honor is being given to me, as I find ways to help others to be stronger at what they do. I have been given an opportunity to survive comfortably. My recent plight to help strengthen the businesses of young designer brands of color has given me “flight”, next level. I do what I do because I am called to do. Thank you @cfda Grateful that I am rewarded by a luxury brand like Gucci that reached out to join forces with me. While we help the global world with their initiatives #changemakers, it also affords me to help my world of black designers. I want to thank all for the support and gratitude. Especially for being so happy seeing me in Gucci pre-fall 2020 lookbook. @gucci and the vision of @alessandro_michele. All to say..,it’s not how you start, not the bumps along the way, but it’s how we end. Grateful for another year of learning that we are meant to survive, especially if you are a “do-gooder”. But for sure this year because I still see the support, the respect and acknowledgements, I am relevant. So grateful !Likes : 11027

This is a memorable moment at the NAACP Awards on the evening of one of Kadeem’s two times win for Best Actor in a Comedy series of “A Different World” Years later winning for Best Actor in LifeTimes series ‘The Fantasia Story”…3 times is a winning charm. Meanwhile that was us entering before that 2nd NAACP win. I tell you this story or details because I simply love this photograph of us. Me always interacting and Kadeem always the “cool solider”. Caption : It’s that time in life when you wake up and realize that you are never too old to learn. You become flabbergasted by the action of others and realize there is so much about another you couldn’t imagine no matter how much you think you know them until a certain time and circumstance comes to play. You come to realize what you see is not what you necessarily get, because life is not over. It all depends on what’s missing in their life how a moment in yours could trigger something in them that no longer allows them to remain the same. You will not see it coming because it’s beyond expectation. The effect is astonishing and as much as it’s unbelievable, you must learn to roll with the punch. It’s nothing to do with you. But the insecurity within them is indeed. The love and respect lessen for what you witness but the memories will remain. The great thing about aging if you have lived a good life and pursuit of always doing the right thing with compassion for others, there are rewards for that. Here on earth and beyond, you will reap as others who have benefited will be your joy, and usher you through. So let go of the unworthy and hold tight what reminds you of your successes. Life is long, if blessed to live it and short as well, towards the end. I am finally recognizing my goodness and worth. 🌺 #invisiblebeautyfilmLikes : 10158

Caption : I am always a bit late to the party. But here I am…everyone has posted. This Vogue cover of 100 separate images was an achievement and a blessing doing it all on film. Making a point…barely anyone shoots film anymore…sad. But my push to post, naturally is out of respect, but mostly I was seeing through out the day the joy it brought so many others seeing me on the cover of Vogue Italia amongst the 100. I thank all of you who it made happy and put a smile on your face. That’s ❤️ It’s wonderful to participate in a creative effort for a publication I admired under the helm of EIC Franca Sozzani (deceased) where she made me an Editor at Large as I contributed to VogueBlack.it Now to be part of this special issue of @vogueitalia edited by EIC @efarneti creative director @ferdinandoverderi @pg_dmcasting @samuel_ellis Photogragher: Mark Borthwick (adored and who played reggae music the entire day) Stylist: @mr_carlos_nazario Hair: @jawaraw Makeup: @susiesobol_makeup 100 covers, 100 people, 100 stories #vogueitalia100 The September issue on stands as of today August 28th. A special shout out to @jasonsoul1 of Soul Artist who tracked me down while I was peacefully hiding in the mountains of NY and encouraged me to “please say yes”. It was a great day, great studio and shoot, efficiently managed. I registered and walked in together with my dear sweet @pattihansen, then saw others I knew, like my soulmate @kikilayne because whenever we see each other it’s a special environment, location and rarely pre-arranged. All and all it was a special day…knowing we were all conscious of the pandemic, yet felt safe and normal. Thank you @vogueitalia for the collaboration. The results I have seen are so cool, especially the audio videos. Look forward to having my personal issue to explore.Likes : 9796

Caption : For me once again life will not be the same. This lost broke me. Same feeling with the lost of Nick Kamen and Jean Michel Basquiat. I see how and have wondered why ? Every other passing I embrace with sadness and emotion some less or more, but once again to hear that Gail was no longer alive was a stunner. She didn’t want anyone to know that she was ill, only few and family. She wanted to do this alone with less fuss. I have witness how certain people come on earth and bring something that connects to my spirit deeply. As did Jean Michel, Nick and Gail. Each of their passing hurt deeply. It was a different type of close. Each far younger than I. But close we were in an unobvious way. From the time she and I met we maintain our relationship, started in the early 80’s before the Black Girls Coalition, which she was part of, and after I started my model agency. I would go to Gail with a thought of interest or plan of action. Her intellect I admired and sense of reason, which helped me as I often needed that other set of ears and eyes, as I was out there in business on my own. Yes she was beautiful, smart and gracious. She led with compassion. It has been hard for me to acknowledge her passing, needed days to come to this acceptance so I could acknowledge it publicly, was unable prior to speak to others or the media that my dear “Gaily” was no longer with us. But I needed to acknowledge her as I have with others. I last heard from Gail, July 21 when I announced my film Invisible Beauty was being distributed theatrically. She text to say how proud and hoped it came to Atlanta. I recently thought let me remind Gail, it’s in Atlanta. Then I received the news, gone that Tuesday Oct 10th. No reason right away until her family member contacted me two days later to explain all. I will always think she is here and glad my needs are less. Rest well “my bella”. 🙏🏾Likes : 8011

Caption : Today it being International Women’s Day…I have so many women on my mind that I am very proud of. Some who are close to me and some from a far. I am blessed to have witness strength and talent in so many in these many decades I have lived. My mother and grandmother were unique characters. And I was allowed to be who I was with little restraint and enormous support. If I was to start naming the women that have my attention today, there are far too many in every generation, Z, Y, X and we Baby Boomers….I have always seen and been inspired by other women. As well as supported by other women, as I am today. I know if you live a strong and compassionate existence you are rewarded by support of others. Not only do you inspire you gain continued insight and remain inspired. As I continue to age I am thinking what to leave behind and how ? Not just a book and film, but a tangible environment. As a woman I have never felt lesser, lucky me. One main reason, I didn’t come up in a corporate environment. My growth and support professionally was the apparel industry, in the garment center of NYC. All roads for me started and led to style. Caption : After premiering Sundance FF in late January, my co-director Frédéric Tcheng and I hit the film festival circuit end of March. Since then we have been invited and attended 8 or more festivals. Sometimes the film goes to a festival and we don’t attend like the festival in Barcelona or the upcoming festival in Jerusalem. As hectic and demanding as it is, it’s also inspiring. There is nothing like going to these festivals and meeting the audiences and experiencing the Q&As. The joy to experience the amount of festivals that is inviting our film and getting to audiences by going to city after city and let all who view and witness tell you how touched, inspired and wonderful the film has had its effect. Their responses have been rewarding and we are so happy to share the film with all. We believe it’s a legacy film. I remember after seeing the film edited down to four hours I became a believer…until then the “jury was out.” Though I did the work as the subject and co-directed, still…seeing is believing. As we continue to travel to festivals, the joy of having our New York Premiere at Tribeca Film Festival coming up is everything and exciting. I have a long history with the festival, and a born and bred New Yorker. This is a New York story that fills everyone’s cup no matter where you are from. So come to the festival and see “Invisible Beauty.” I’ll be there. Excited to share, hope you enjoy and tell me your thoughts at the Q & A. Caption : Let me say if I haven’t said before, this my friends has been a journey. Before I go on let me thank each and everyone that has watched the film and encouraged others to see it, are still doing that, and voted for us when we asked. Also our very cool, tell it like it was/is cast, those wonderful production teammates that brought their good character and great skills to the table. Our exceptional, no nonsense Producer Lisa Cortes, and my ride or die co-director Frédéric Tcheng, who is just an exceptional human that the spirits put in my life at the right time. And he has taken care of me and continues to do so. We have gotten through most of “the mountains to climb” and now we can coast a bit. We are at our new home HULU !!! I feel like we are in a accelerate program from premiering Sundance January 2023, Tribeca FF, and through the year of the film festival circuit. But I claim to make this a legacy film, not just for now , but in an eternal place that lives on to be seen at will. As exhausted as I felt at the end of December 2023 I can only say we earnestly did it. I am simply proud of a story well told and embraced by all. 💯Rotten Tomatoes, 5 Stars, 8.1 IMDB and an almost 8 week theatrical run. Almost unusual. All satisfied whatever I could have imagined and yet we managed to achieve. Once again, I thank each of you and all others. @invisiblebeautyfilm @cortesfilms @jpauldallas @magnoliapicsLikes : 7300

Caption : Mr Daniel Day aka Dapper Dan has been awarded with this years CFDA’s Geoffrey Beene Lifetime Achievement Award. Perhaps first thought after hearing this, one might question “why or how”? I heard some rumblings of discomfort, a few apparel designers might not been happy with that decision to recognize DD with this award. But on second thought, why not? This gentleman, long ago, effected a culture and added some bling where there was none. Being a designer comes with training and education. Today most designers can’t drape nor cut a pattern. My exposed school of training was the need to know all the technical aspects of design. You needed to know more than just an idea and have an assistant who knew how to sketch. But apparel fashion life has changed. Our NYC garment center is barely memorable, many brands are doing “streetwear” which still has me perplexed. Manufacturing and retail, are finding its place, as its respect for so many emerging design brands. Luxury, better goods, moderate to sustainability, all are reaching to succeed. All to say it’s a different day then yesterday. Watching all of the young brands getting opportunities recently. It’s exciting for many that dared to dream and now finally seeing light. There has been a shift to the benefit of others. Those who were under served or under recognized are now having their day. You can’t be mad at that. And seeing what’s being viewed, recognition is being rewarded. This is good. The Designers Hub that I founded in 2018, many of them are having a great moment that was not happening prior to 2020. The Hub consists of apparel and accessory designers of color. The journey of Dapper Dan has effected culture and his story alone is worth rewarding. Many things these days are not what we knew before. We must allow others to do what they do best and accept that truth to have value. I am accepting that in others as well. Live and let live. Be happy for what another has achieved. As it’s no real skin off your nose, otherwise it’s pure jealousy. Whats meant shall be. I am excited that the CFDA decided to recognize Dapper Dan (and so is Stephen Burrows) Congratulations to all !!! @dapperdanharlem @cfdaLikes : 7280

Caption : I am often told I am “cool”. When said to me, I wonder what does the person, who is saying it, what have they observed ? Often I am also told “I want to be you when I grow up”. Young and old have said as they marvel how I move through the life. Perhaps I was destined to finesse myself through or was it through parental education, a good amount of life teacher exposing me to the basic rules for a better life. Not financially better per se but culturally. Just the basic norms of how to behave. Trust me, knowing and having good manners can take you a long way. Unfortunately you perhaps know people who seem to be succeeding in their careers and do not have the good manners of a hog. Manners have amazing value. That to me is being cool. Willi Smith, deceased designer, had that “it” factor, of great manners and elegant class. I always marveled at that, he was young and just knew all the right things to say and do. To me that is the ultimate of cool. Being able to hold a conversation at a dinner party, remember a name, sending flowers, a hand written note, a token of appreciation. To me these are the most basic things to elevate your life, moving forward. Believe it or not comes great spiritual results. A person is happier internally. Being kind, helping another for no other reason then the obvious, just being conscious and nice gestures. It doesn’t get any more cool than that. One thing for sure, everyone is not meant to be cool unfortunately, otherwise it wouldn’t be special. But we all should try to be in the “cool club”. Efforts have perks. These listed I would say are small pearls of wisdom. Consider its like breathing, good for your overall health. *Elijah Cummings “the coolest” no doubt. Caption : This past week I learned… *Madiba would have been 101yrs old *53,190 are imprisoned in US immigrant detention centers and ”45” is not getting enough backlash from sounding like a bigot. That it’s been 20 years since the death of Carolyn Bessette and John Kennedy Jr. Carolyn was a sweet friend of mine. We met when she worked for Calvin Klein as an in-house publicist. My office Bethann Mgmt Co. was at 36 N Moore St. a model agency. Though I was close to Calvin, Carolyn made my life easier and was helpful to my business. When Carolyn met John, she quit her job and moved in with him. John had taken residency on N. Moore. She wanted me to meet him, we did. Some days going to the office in the mornings I would see John, he would wave. One morning getting out of my convertible Volkswagen Beetle Bug, John walks by and says “Give her a call and wake her up”. Does she have an appt, I asked, No he said, just wake her up. I did. She and I would laugh. Somedays while in my office I would look up to see Caroline sitting outside on my platform loading zone. Waiting for me to notice and come out and talk. We would spend a little time catching up. I remember asking “how’s it going” ? Her answer “cats and dogs”. I smiled. A great answer to express a male and female getting familiar with each other. To this day…I use that expression in that manner with my thoughts of Carolyn. Such a blessing the love they had. He loved and protected her. Three days before the accident, I saw Carolyn up the street on N.Moore, she was low. She said John was having a tough time due to his cousin Anthony (Radziwill) was sick and dying who he was very close with. Spoke about 15 mins, they would be leaving in a few days to Martha Vineyard to a family wedding. She told me when they would get back, I told her I would already be in my home in Mexico. A long embrace and a promise on my return. Their plane that John was piloting was lost on their way to MV, Mass. and found days later, all dead including Carolyn’s sister. Devastated was I. Of cause this was a full on tragedy. Anyone who knew Carolyn knew a special soul and John was an exceptional young man. Truly two stars. A great lost. 🖤Likes : 6975

Caption : This one hurt… It’s taken me two days to get here to acknowledge someone who I knew and adored. I learned that my friend had transition. I left NY knowing she had not been well, prepared to hear the news, not prepared when I heard it. I learned on Tuesday morning here in Marrakech. So that evening I had a couple of tequilas because the day had been too sad, poured some beer out in corner of the courtyard, and wished someone I had known for three decades a beautiful flight. Someone who believed in the fact that my story must be told. Toni would say..”if I was still in publishing there be no way you wouldn’t have a book published. You are are too important not to tell your story”. That was years before the last waves of my achievements that probably confirmed how she felt and knew. We met in the late 70’s early 80’s through Ed Love, young actor/ dancer and dear friend to us both, who passed away too young. Toni was brilliant as you all can attest to…seeing all the accolades the last two days has been more then I have seen for any contemporary, she has left a stream of quotes and written words beyond any other, in my humble opinion. Tribe of Baldwin and Maya. Her interviews let you know, she never held back, she had no fear. She knew who she was. She wanted me to know who I was. To write it, share it, get it out. Toni encouraged us all to tell the story you would like to read. She knew I lacked the confidence, yet she would laugh at the idea that I would hesitate and not perform what she considered my duty. Toni and I were very much a like when it came to keeping it real. We had no problem speaking our minds, or speaking about other people to each other. The laughter, especially her laugh. A tough time was when her home buried to the ground in late 80’s or early 90’s and her eldest son’s death in 2010. Not easy to lose a child. Toni was a single mom like me, like many of us. She never felt she did a great job, but who of us think we did ? It just works out. She did so very well in the work, and received the recognition. I will always keep her in my heart. And I will write the book, for me, for you, for her. 8/5/19 she joined the ancestors. 🖤Likes : 6859

Caption : Reflecting on my time on earth and its results. As we grow, we learn, we experience and we respond to what life has offered. If you are full on in time, “fully grown”, how you see things now, oppose to how you might have seen them as a teenager or young adult differs. Experience, time, and wisdom, seems to be the defining factors. Surely for me, I recognize the patience I no longer have that I would have had ease to accept or perhaps even allow prior. In my early life I saw decency in every thing, would explain the actions of others to an acceptable place. Help other observers to try to see the good in the action of a scoundrel. I gained the nickname “mother Theresa” and “mayonnaise”. This being the Holy month of Ramadan it gifts you the opportunity to be introspective, this is the last week of that month. And if nothing more I want to recognize my time on earth and where I am today. To recognize how the action of others, not necessarily pointed at me, can offend me, to a place I lose respect. I need not tell them, I can live with it, realizing I don’t “like it or them”. My entire young life, I liked everyone. Even when I started my model agency in the 80’s I just dodged the emotions based on the not cool things that were done to challenge me or hurt my success. I didn’t turn the other cheek, I knew the mission and while being judged had no time to fixate. Most people would have had much to say. I was the target, I couldn’t. Even then I couldn’t judge or be angry it was more like surfing a wave. All to say the life now has found an observing eye and a voice to match. I want all who I love to be a certain way and those I don’t to be out of the way. Easy to want but it’s not up to me, unless you change your neighborhood, your environment your life and relationships. There lies the difference between youth and maturity. In your youth it’s not the choice to make. In maturity you can afford to make these decisions and accept the consequences of less being more. You have lived a life, who fits, stays. But somehow you are that same youth with the blessing of age, fortunate to have found your tribe. Queen you are, Teen you be.Likes : 6396

As I held this little one in my arms I said in her ear… ”welcome to our world..I promise to help protect you from all that appears shiny that ain’t gold..and from too much hype that can destroy character, and offer you discipline when needed…” These words I say early to this new spirit and will remind her from time to time as she grows. It’s my duty and it is expected of me. This is the daughter of my “daughter” Naomi, who I have known since she was 14yrs old. This is a gift that I know she will treasure eternally. I long to remain healthy for a good amount of years to come, to add continued guidance and support to you both. There is no greater birthday gift that I could bestow beyond my undying devotion to what is an extension of you. Caption : As we come away from Passover into the Resurrection of Easter Sunday and soon the holy month of Ramadan, we truly face a new day. To me this photo lends itself to the feeling of being pious, a sense of longing, which seems suitable during this stretch of religious observations. Taken last August ‘19 on the roof of my dwelling in Marrakech by Photogragher Pieter Henket. It’s the first time I have shared this image but somehow felt its spirit lent to this very moment in time, as I pray and dream for a better day then today. That scientists find their way to a vaccine for Covid-19. That the black-brown communities recognize that they/we are not beyond the virus. That we all learn from this experience, what needs to improve. No matter how big or small the effort or results, we need to make an effort to improve our lives. This is a wake up call and not let others die in vain. Best we think differently moving forward. Best we look at our love ones differently. Best we decide where to go from here if and when we survive this pandemic. I long for all, only wish I was capable of doing more. I can only share my wisdom through this medium. Love the passion and devotion of the first responders, who deserve our un-dying support by any means. Recognize all the celebrities, musicians, athletes, and others who are ringing the bell with their generosity and charitable efforts during this global “mind blow”. I am basically concern with the ignorance of others who are making light of this virus as they endanger others and themselves. I want to wake up in a new world when this is over, not return with a wipe of the brow. Too much has been sacrificed to return back with the attitude of “business as usual”. Praying for the universe and mankind to make a sharp u-turn. Sending my love and respect to all jewish, christian, muslim followers an all non-believers. This earth and its inhabitants needed a break but unfortunately at such a deadly and financial cost. #stayhome #changethecourse #flattenthecurve @pieterhenket @boomproductions @riaddarmoda @hardibabe @kadeemhardisonLikes : 6319

This is a big feat to accomplish but in every instance I have a great supportive team of talented others who surround me. It’s time… I know…if you never knew, I had 21 years of dread lock growth for those who didn’t know me then. This is a memorable image of me shot by Torkil Gudnason for an Italian magazine edited by former model Donna Jordan. Later we got permission to use this image for an Interview Magazine feature under the then EID Ingrid Sischy. My personal story is large in a simple way but woven through many moments and people. I look back and think, how many, many wonderful moments for a latch key kid from Bedford Stuyvesant. Now that I have purpose to look back and recall, I too am amazed at the life I have lived and enjoyed. Remembering all who loved me and enjoyed who I was, encouraging me to accept, believe, and step further. And I did. Sometimes I had to be encourage to step into the unknown. And it was never a mistake, I gained every time. There are many stories to share. I too cannot believe who or what, when I start to open my memory lane. No doubt its a story to share as so many of you have begged me to do, to compose all that others could read and know. Perhaps this will allow me do more then one, perhaps this will take me on further to fulfill something more. I am grateful that at this age I have still the faculties and physical strength to keep this movement in motion. Grateful for so many believing and needing me to give as I continue to receive. I will keep this precious audience connected as I embark on this story telling journey. I spent his birthday evening with my son Kadeem for what we deem as “our birth day” on Saturday and it was a great gift as I am usually at distance. I walked away inspired… Now I am ready to embrace what for long I feared I personally couldn’t do. This week I shared a sad memory. But the one I share today, is another memorable moment, but of joy. You as young Dwayne Wayne in this moment that if not already is cult, will be. “A Different World” made a great impact on our society and raised the bar for higher academic education. We all are so grateful to you for your participation in this original broadcast that so many actors had opportunity to play, so many writers to write, with talented producers and director (madame Allen) that sharpen their tools on great material to shape and master. Taking on social issues before any network shows, though they tried and try to claim it . ADW was first on so many levels. I remember this episode, not your personal finest moment to play, but it surely was ours, the audience. Thank you for giving us Dwayne. And for being that wonderful human from the very beginning until now. (I could complain, but why, it’s your birthday and others are watching) Grateful to those who conceived it and the broadcaster. So need to give credit where credit is do. #drbillcosby #carseywarner #nbc #debbieallen #castandcrewofadifferentworld @therealdebbieallen Thank you again. Happy Birthday with so much love and fondness. @kahmoshun. And y’all know I don’t do this. Some are shock…Bethann and Kadeem ?? Yep…Hardison. We be us.Likes : 6112

Caption : Happy Birthday o Feliz Cumpleaños!!! Trying to catch up and get in front of all the well wishes coming to me. Let me clarify… I celebrate my birthday September 30 but learned at the age of 12 it was technically the 29th. Mother said 3 mins after 12 midnight , father proved it was 3 mins before 12 midnight. No matter, I continued to celebrate September 30th supporting my mother to the end. I share this Essence cover in memory of the support of many who believed in my image at that time. As I was not a print girl or top model per se. I was modeling and had rose to the top of those important runway girls, I who so happen to have a full time job, as the showroom model and then design assistant to Stephen Burrows, that was the 70’s. But the editor Marcia Gillespie, of Essence was determined to have that dark skin girl, name Bethann on the cover. She shot it 3 different times until they were satisfied with it. Determined was she. I share it now because yesterday September 29th…my publisher One World/Roc.Lit, a Random House imprint announced our book deal. It’s stories like this I will remember to share and then some. I am proud of my time on earth with all and especially this moment now as I live and breathe strongly and continue to achieve. An example of what I want you all to see and know, “it ain’t over til it’s over”. Live consciously. And be kind to all others as you travel your life journey. Compassion is key. Doing things to be recognized is one way to get attention. But its not my way. Putting in earnest seeds in the ground of a global society, would be me. Perhaps that’s what’s replenishing me, at this age, at this stage. The book that all of you has been hankering for I will deliver in Spring 2022 to the publisher…In sha Allah. It’s a good time. Recently we lost a few very good souls, from Richard Buckley to Sarah Dash to George Malkemus to Melvin Van Peebles. Surely there are more, but those were mine in the last week. Reminds me of my blessings of strength and clarity, to not take for granted. I owe you my story to add to your better selves and grateful that I am still healthy to share. The clock is ticking. Always keep that in mind.Likes : 6041

Caption : This is a hard one… Always said, if and when Issey would pass that would be the time for me to return to Japan. Today I learned he has left us. And I am in the mountains of New York as he was in the mountains of Japan. Issey was the next designer that I had a close model as muse relationship with and then collaborator after Willi Smith and Stephen Burrows. Issey was next level for me as I met him for my first time on the Paris runway. After that booking, I became his go to model from the USA. Issey saw in me the Samurai that I portrayed on his runway. I worked with Issey Miyake through the 70’s. In Paris. New York and Japan. His clothes were Japanese inspired. He would say, “if Bethann doesn’t know how to wear, then we must re-design”. He could count on me to bring life to the garment. I could count on him to inspired me. He began to call me his sister. When he was preparing a big show in Japan he needed me to cast the models and that I did. The best casting that included Grace Jones and other beauties of that time. I couldn’t attend as I was Burrows’ assistant and the collection was due, a conflict which was a disappointment for Issey. Next time he made me promised I would be there and I was able to do so. We did his “East Meets West” book, advertising for Parco and showed the collection in Tokyo and Kyoto. I had cast that show of models as well but this time I was there that made Issey and his team very happy. I also oversaw another Issey Miyake book “Body Works” produced by me and photographed by the late Marcus Leatherdale here in New York. Issey trusted me to deliver and we did. Losing a model I had to step in being partially nude. That’s just a small amount to share in memory of my dear Issey, who meant so much to us all, especially the models of color. He was all in, having us, he saw our value. The photo I chose here is what he was like the decade we spent together. A great talent, humanitarian who developed textiles and encouraged younger designers of Japan. I hate that he too is gone with my other greats..but such is life. And yet I remain…In sha Allah. #isseymiyake #isseymiyakedesigns 🖤🙏🏾🖤Likes : 6031

Caption : Every so often in life you meet someone that suits your soul. The only way to explain it, its “karmic”. I met Bart Grzybowski in 2013. It may appeared that we might not have much in common, race, gender, age, cultural background, yet our relationship was immediate. Connected we were for sure. Bart cared for me from our first encounter. Others imagined what they thought, but we were beyond the imagination of most. He was “my guy”. That is how I referred to him. Labels are useless more often then not. He never cared about what anyone thought, only my well being. How often do we experience that ? We hung tight for four years before he finally was called to the open air of Colorado. Things happen at the right time no doubt. Both of our lives goes on, happily. Every so often there is that special human gem that functions advanced of any assumption. A special spirit in my heart with many fond memories. Wishing my very dear friend a very Happy Birthday 🎂🎉🎁 💕with eternal love. #blessedbytheloveofothersLikes : 5821

Raquel (who I later called Rockie) wanted to have representation for her daughter Tahnee. Someone she knew told her about me. I was working at the agency Click Models. I was asked to come to dinner to be introduce to Tahnee. It was mutual admiration immediately. I introduced Tahnee to the agency. Of course she was desired, it was the daughter of Raquel Welch and she was pretty to boot. It was not so much to model per se but to act. I believed sincerely of the possibility even though we were basically a model agency, I truly dreamed of the silver screen of film. When I left Click to start my own agency, Tahnee was the only talent that had come to Click agency because of me. Tahnee saw it that way as did Raquel. They both supported me and had no other connection to the agency. Tahnee was called and was begged to remain at Click. She had no problem saying no. It was interesting to me how supportive they both were when I had nothing but the opportunity to go my on way. I was not established but it was meant. Tahnee was not in a hurry as she was not a working model per se. Soon after, Racquel got a call from Italy of a film interest in Tahnee, she called me. This was my interest. Tahnee and I were flown to Italy to meet the production company. She remained to do the film and I came back to New York to set up the company and find an office. Which I did all because I was given purpose by Tahnee and Racquel. Tahnee believed in me as did Racquel. Often times I would wonder why ? A Black young woman, with barely a pot to piss in, stuck in a situation where I had to prove myself, at the time with no financial support, just their belief that I could do it carried me through. Tahnee was my first and only talent, while she made her first movie, I was able to start Bethann Management due to my model Bonnie Berman who waited in the wings and found us the money. And there is far too much distraction to have learn of her as you stroll through this life. But as I was starting to spread my wings in the world of fashion design and fashion models, girls like Carol LaBrie, Barbara Cheesborough, Naomi Sims, were happening here in New York and Paris. This was the late 60’s and early 70’s. The story of the model of color tells an inspiring tale. For me going to Paris and seeing Carol in rare form was like being at a peep show. Exciting to watch and be around it. She was in the launch of Essence Magazine. The models marching in the street with fist clenched, arms outstretched, she being the lead model (1970). The image back then was everything representing the current cultural moment. So seeing her a few years later in Paris was everything. But everything was everything then. The newness, bohemianism and style of the time was ever inspiring. And Carol contributed to that environment there in Paris. She was the muse of Kenzo (r.i.p). When she opened up his shows, you knew she was part of the House of Kenzo. It was so personal with such pride. She had a great walk, no swing of the hips, it had purpose, it was personal and she was tall, it had a strong feeling of natural intent and ownership. Every great runway model should have, “a feeling of intent with purpose and ownership”. But that confidence is built by being a muse…rare is a muse to be found these days. Carol had amazing free flowing style with a personality to match. Besides being a great model of a time gone by and her relationship with Kenzo was unique. She later married the love of her life, photographer Uli Rose and birth five children. And their children had children. Carol LaBrie passed away February 18, 2021. I am full of many memories. But if nothing more in memory, she made a difference during her time. In addition having five children and becoming a grandmother, she left behind a loved clan. She was good to those she loved and liked, and never wasted her time with others. Rest In Peace, Ms. Rose. I will always remember you. #carollabrieLikes : 5552

Caption : “Invisible Beauty” is premiering at #Sundance 2023 ! It tells the story of a tireless fight to change what got lost in maintaining racial diversity within the model and fashion industries. Mark your calendars for January 19-29. For info on how to attend @sundanceorg in person screening please visit here: festival.Sundance.org As you might know or not, this documentary has been on its own journey. The subject had changed, it became my story and no longer only about an industry that lost its way. Grateful for all who believed and stepped in to help me complete this circle. As time goes will let you know whats happens next to get this film seen by the world. In sha Allah. Just know I appreciate all of you and the support given me all these many years. Caption : Thinking of so many today as we acknowledge Gay Pride Week…though I chose to use a photo of our dear Keith Haring with Lysa Cooper who was so close to Keith, the photo marks a moment in time, the 80’s. We lost Keith in 1990 at the age of 32 to AIDS. Keith Haring represented a moment in time for so many reasons. It was Tina Chow who let me know that Keith was sick, she told me he would tell me and he did. He asked me to his home to have dinner, just he and I. And told me all. Sent me home with a painting that hangs on my wall today. He died months after. Knowing his fate, he worked tirelessly to the end. When he could no longer stand, he passed away three weeks later. Later we lost Tina as well, to AIDS. You say but she was heterosexual and a non-drug intravenous user, life has its bitter sweet moments. We lost so many and though I cannot name all those that touched me personally, I acknowledge, Joe McDonald, Angelo Donghia, Clovis Ruffin, Way Bandy, Luis Galindo, Angelo Colon, Bobby Breslau, Victor Hernández, Perry Ellis, Keezia Keeble, DuDu, and Willi Smith. There were so many that AIDS took away from us. Many, but those I named above had an impact on me personally. The disease taught me a lot about the “here and now”. I will always remember each of them and think of them out loud, as I share and think about my life. I was one of the first to get tested for the HIV virus. That was when you had to wait 2-3 weeks and return for the secret reveal (80’s). My family and those in my office thought I was crazy to do the test. Why stress yourself with that anxiety of uncertainty ? But I had “been around the block” a time or two, and wanted to know my status to then walk the “straight and narrow”. A lot of us for whatever reason survived. I never thought “lucky”, but perhaps to remain, to remember and let it be known who was here before and the life we lived. Because it was a great time. And the freedom that came with it, great as it was, there hidden was a killer virus waiting to strike. #prideweek #actup #stonewall #aids #hiv #awareness #protection #stillnotover.Likes : 5222

Caption : January 10, 2016 was the passing of our dear David Bowie. Still a hard pill to swallow, for me, the family, friends and fans worldwide. But today I think of him on the memorial of his death and days before. Because we would have been in deep conversation about politics and surely about the Georgia Senate upset. I had place my money on “horses” that needed to win and supported the energy of those who were going to turn the wheels of time, Stacy Abrams and those like her doing all it would take to win, getting those to the polls one way or another. I had faith it could happen, confident about Rev Raphael Warnock but saw a dim tunnel for the young Jon Ossoff. Nonetheless I put my money where my doubt was and prayed that this spirited young man of 33 years could beat his opponent. I was impressed with him. A dear friend questioned the party’s selection because he was Jewish. Old thinking I thought, as I continued to pray because he was “my horse”. Surely I had doubts until he was behind 919 votes. I went to sleep with hopes that like “Seabiscuit” he would come from the rear. I woke to him doing just that but too soon to call. That’s all I needed. The second youngest Senator ever in the history of the USA. Joe Biden being the youngest at 30 yrs old. Finally the Senate had a shift in power. In my mind, my few dollars and my eye on the prize of Jon Ossoff did it’s do. It may be a spiritual way of thinking, but with a few bucks for each candidate and the wind to the back of Ms Abrams and the crews, thats all I had. Since then and thereafter it would have been fun to hear David as he watched “those” scale the walls of the Capitol. I could only imagine what his take would have been on all. Congratulations Georgia ! And with you David always on my mind. @jonossoff @staceyabrams @raphaelwarnock #georgia #davidbowieLikes : 5163

Caption : Clarity and the value of knowing self is important as we move forward through the first Full Wolf Moon of 2020 (Jan 10-11). Happy New Year to all !!! I am looking forward to the future of this decade. I reflect on the past as a foundation for my future but I don’t ever over-reflect in what was. Because there is a lot to achieve moving forward. This is truly not the time to worry about the whims and opinions of others. Running your own race and recognizing “time is of the essence” has never been truer. My objective is to be as physically strong as possible, so good health is everything, to be able to live the life that is being provided. I know now and have always had a strong sense and belief of self. Not necessarily my value to others, that has come with time. I have been challenged by what others thought was the right way or just “the way” to go about this life. It was obvious to me that I knew better. The industry and social society was on a different page completely at one point. I knew I needed them to make a correction. Surely it would not be of popular opinion but it had gotten out of hand. And whoever was leading and following, obviously was not expecting my point of view. I couldn’t worry what they thought of me as they were traveling in the wrong direction. One of the greatest things about aging and being “full grown” is being around longer than most, with the experiences and wisdom (besides talent of good sense), that gives you the upper hand on what was, oppose to what is. In my case, I have been blessed along the path of being well respected, liked and barely ever a negative word. Being stern in my beliefs, when training employees, or saying no to potential models, I might have been referred to as a “bitch”, which is easy to live with. To me I always felt that is said out of frustration, never offended. I am a social educator. I am tough love, for anyone I advise. I have more to give and do, then being concern of the opinion of someone who is in the wrong direction. This is where the importance of self awareness comes in. Know your purpose because everyone has an opinion.Likes : 5129

Caption : HAPPY MOTHERS DAY !!! To each and every mother and women who are not mothers…No doubt we all are mothering some one or have done so and tired of such a demanding gig. I have been known to have said “I am going to mother my son until the end.” So wish I hadn’t thought it but it does seem to come with the territory. But as people grow yours and others, there is less need to be so hands on. That’s the good news. Recently what has been my cross to bare has been my film production, it’s journey, film festival circuit, media promotions, etc. That has been my recent focus, something I had never done before and blessed that we succeeded and proud of the results. I must be meant for putting out the energy it took, mostly the travel, as everyone says, “I don’t know how you do it ?” It’s obviously my destiny to have the strength to deliver still. Need to have the same diligence for the upcoming published book. Yet I am determined with distractions and all to climb that mountain. It’s moments like this I recognize my own strength. I have an injured knee that deserves surgery, because I seem to survive with discomfort but no real pain, I keep going. My surgeon says “pain is an incentive” and he doesn’t see how I am walking. Surely it’s the strength within me, I focused on essential oils and rubbing my knees and talked to them morning and night. It’s gotten me this far. He said whenever you have 2 months free let me know. This July/August, I am going in. My balance and body alignment is off. This could make you go to bed and cry, because the recovery and fight back will demand that strength of a strong woman. Can’t be strong for some things and not for all. Because my film still needs me as we hit more learning institutes, HBCUs, completion of the book, my living in far away places, and for those who count on my spirit, There needs to be a come back. We can do it all…In sha Allah @invisiblebeautyfilm @huluLikes : 5114

It was the first time a table was hosted by a black designer in behalf of @Gucci who was also a co-chair of the opening of the Camp exhibit Our table was so eclectic, from @karliekloss to @frenchmontana to @ashleygraham to @omarihardwickofficial to @morereginahall @bevysmith @jelaniday and of course Dap himself. A very special night and as French and I were sashaying out at the end of the night, we got grab before stepping out of the museum for another photograph which was later titled “Black Camp” and gifted by @aurorajames. Can you recognized who was captured in this shot ? Must say, I like who is being invited to the ball these last 6-8 yrs, popular culture racially is leaving its mark. Nice for me to see since I started attending with Ms Vreeland who originally headed the Costume Institute. For years it didn’t reflect what was first initiated and different under Ms. Wintour but I must say it brings me joy to see who is representing the audience in attendance now. If you are making a mark in art, music, tv/film, fashion, etc. and of color, you are invited, but of course under the choice of the director of the evening. It’s giving the Met Ball a whole flair of style and energy. It was my second time under Ms Wintour and perhaps 3-4 times times under Ms.Vreeland. If I never go again, I am happy who will be in attendance…”carry on children and represent”. #metball #dapperdan #gucciLikes : 5031

Caption : WINNER !!! If you know me, I am a Harry Styles fan, so last night at the @recordingacademy intimate production of the Grammy Awards produced many wonderful wins and performances. Harry’s first time to the Grammy’s gained a great win and performance. Of course looking stylish as always. Winner of Pop Solo Performance: “Watermelon Sugar”. I was so proud. Just to add I am crazy for union of “Silk Sonic” @anderson._paak @brunomars. Had the pleasure of seeing the song performed before last night. All were great and a well produced show. Proud of Beyoncé for her historical win Happy for Megan Three Stallion who needs a bit of media training. Always good to see a Cardi B performance. Dua Lipa has worked hard so well deserved. Billie Eilish and brother Finneas were laid back as usual. Just naming a few. All to say, this type of Grammy production has allowed more of a focus on the artist and less on all the outside noise. For me “less being more”. Seeing the artist and meet community of others that we don’t normally know. Caption : Oh what days these are… I know what’s there to do and what’s expected of me by me, yet getting to the goal you have set is perhaps beyond your physical capabilities at this stage. One is to organize the lower level (known to most as the basement of the house). Got only a few days to achieve before returning to another environment where there are things waiting to do as well. Where ever you go there you are..that expression comes in to play. This is the first time I have taken on a lot to achieve, want and need to get it done and want to continue to space out at the same time. Seeing life as it is and not as you want it to be is the simple personal challenge. I am a grateful soul and have been since being a child. Quite amazed when I achieve what I set out to do. Youth seems to allow that with more ease. Nothing to compare and energy to burn. Now…when I express to others, my streak of laziness or not being ambitious, it’s a joke to the listeners. But I know how I roll and have to encourage myself to get where I am going. Otherwise procrastination would not be my friend. I never seem to let me down but I do get close to the edge. I love the comfort of no commitments and nothing to do. So when it time to make it happen thank goodness I still have some gas in the tank. But the conflict is real. In closing…My spirit lingers close to the soul of Josephine Baker who I knew, met in 1970 in Stockholm, stayed close to her boyfriend Robert for awhile after she passed on. Wonderful news.. France is moving her remains from MonteCarlo to the Pantheon in Paris where French heroes are buried. All to say “you can’t keep a good woman down”. I know she was famous but I adored her, as she did me. Life truly provides. Best I get it done so there is something to be remembered. #josephinebaker #lifeafterdeath #lifewhileliving #itsallgoodLikes : 4802

Caption : On Tues, Sept 24, in Paris, goodbyes were said to Peter Lindbergh, an exceptional fashion photographer who so happen to have an exceptional character, with a kind and sweet soul. It’s taken me sometime to get back to social media, in general. Then the death of Peter, prior to his, Isabel Toledo, then after Peter, Marina Schiano, all really set me back. Perhaps some of you barely heard of Isabel and never of Marina. All three were important, at different times and part of the trenches of fashion. On August 28th, Peter and I sat together on a flight, Ibiza to Paris. I introduced him to David Blaine who sat on the other side of us. David brought his magic of card tricks, blowing Peter’s mind. His 17 yr old son Joseph joined us and shared in the experience. Peter shared with me how happy he was to have his island home this summer, with just his wife and son Joseph, not inviting all other family members for the first time. How great it was and how he thought to repeat it again next year. He felt the peace it brought him. I couldn’t agree more. I told him he was “preaching to the choir” by telling me. On August 31, Peter sent me the most endearing text…. “Dear Bethann…each time it feels somehow like “home” when seeing you, wherever it is !! with love, Peter” Three days later, I learned he had passed away. The light went out. When we shared that plane ride, there was laughter, life updates, and Blaine’s mind disturbing magic, that Peter got a huge kick out of. He told me about his travel to Sweden for British Vogue, to photograph the young activist. His upcoming Dior book that he convinced them of what he wanted to do. We spoke of business reps, what was, and what is. He like me, seemed happy with life. He spoke of his teenage son, (who was lovely to meet) a beautiful boy. And Bonnie Berman (former model) who he loved working with and I had represented. Life always seemed to bring us together. We all loved Peter…Peter loved us. It’s hard to lose the magic of a special soul. They do not get replaced. That is the difficulty in losing Peter. We can all testify to that. Peaceful travels dear sir… you truly will be missed. 🖤Likes : 4281

Because the energy it would take for me to create what was needed to “destroy” or embarrass them, was not needed, what and who would it truly satisfy ? Something said or done falsely, should be corrected to truth, but even then, sometimes not worth the energy. No bullhorn is big enough to announce to all the truth. Best to take it one by one as you meet or if asked. Eventually this too shall pass..and you be a better more peaceful person for letting “sleeping dogs lie”. Our breathe is precious these days. Finding time to breathe deeply would have more value then correcting someone’s action and trying to make them pay for their inappropriate behavior. Because in the end….”It ain’t nothing but a squirrel trying to get a nut”. Deep breathes….Likes : 4161

Two young, talented designers who were my bookends as I grew into my own and worked closely with each of them, separately. First I started with Willi (on the right) who eventually made Stephen aware of me. There is a lot to say about each of them, but it will be in the book 🙂 Surely you would be more aware of Stephen Burrows, due to learning of Versailles in ‘73, then perhaps Willi Smith of WilliWear who passed away in late 80’s. Now you can learn much more about Willi due to the soon to come Museum exhibit. If only you knew how important this is to me…that both will have had a museum exhibit which adds to their legacy, acknowledges their existence and contribution to the fashion industry. I could go on about them both but there is not enough space. They both meant everything to me. They were not friends, but liked and respected each other greatly. So come out, tell all, learn more about this beautiful soul, an artist gone too young, and view the Willi Smith/WilliWear exhibit. Willi Smith Street Couture Opens.. Another designer of color Jay Jaxon (deceased) another contemporary of ours, an exhibit is up in Queens. @queens_historical_society Just know these exhibits in support are rare. I was instrumental in Stephen Burrows at Museum of City NY…and great aid to Willi Smith exhibit. Jay Jaxon I heard from the curator @rachelext that it has opened. Proud of each. #excellenceLikes : 3747

Caption : Eid Mubarak… As we end the Holy month of Ramadan during this Covid-19 pandemic…and this Memorial Day weekend…much is to be remembered and recognized. The end of Ramadan is normally joyous and a moment of celebration. But not this time. As I end the holy fasting, I long to speak with my father to discuss the politics of this current state. My father was a brilliant personality, a very cool and handsome man, who so happen to also be a religious leader, an Imam. He gave counsel and mentor to Malcolm X at a time Malcolm was faced with conflict. What would they both say now? I have so many memories of my life with my father, his great guidance of leadership he gave to others. I realize the importance of these last 30 days, the good you give to others. But also yourself. I have spoken truths to love ones, I have avoided nonsense. I am currently living in the woods so it has its effects. And now it’s time to remember those who are no longer with us. Specifically today as the New York Sunday Times prints the names of 100,000 who lost their lives to the Corona virus. We are still in that zone because people are still dying. I pray deeply for those families who lost love ones. I too lost someone, so dear to me, I was here, she was there, alone. Vera Varner, in a way, she let me know she had left this earth. I called to check in, just to check in, no knowledge she was sick, nor was she weak. Just another woman living alone, in Bklyn, of strength and maturity. She had died one week before I made the call. Entered the hospital 4/28 died 5/4…No one holds your hand during this pandemic while you leave this earth. No choice, that’s the way it is, to prevent the virus from spreading. I wish all our great leaders were alive to witness and weight in on this. If you have lived long enough, it’s very hard to watch, not the pandemic, but the response. The current political administration is different then it has ever been and who and how to manage, has not been a winning tale. So I not only pray in memory of those who were taken away, but for those who should do the right thing. In memory of ALL who gave and lost their lives. 5/2020Likes : 3665

Caption : Model is Muse The model today should be as inspiring as the model of yesterday. As a viewer you recognize her every time and get rewarded every time you see her doing the job she was put there to do. Because a model is photographed doesn’t make them a great one. That comes with time, if they have it even sooner. There were many great editorial models and runway models that I have witness…in this case I will speak of the editorial model. Helen Williams, Naomi Sims, Iman, Bonnie Berman, Linda Evangelista, Kristen McMenamy, Naomi Campbell, etc, a few more I am leaving out due to space. But in this modern model moment, along came Binx Walton. This is a muse. It’s understanding why you are there and what do you bring besides standing in front of the lens. From the moment I met Binx…I was a fan and over these years watching her find her model purpose has been my joy. Surely the photographer becomes smitten. I also have my eye on Anok Yai, so far so good. Her Steven Meisel editorial…was old school “model is muse”, quite brilliant. All to say, today there are many models perhaps too many, but teaching them their purpose and bringing what they got is rare to see. The model must have it because the teachers are rare and if, barely anytime to share that knowledge. If only the talent remained the objective and not just the look. I long for greatness in a model in front of the camera or on the runway to realize their purpose. No one speaks of it any more..an art that could become lost if a demand is not put in place. To be sure that the muse remains and is always sought after. Deep down it’s a sport. Compete to win..in everything we do. Be an inspiration. That is my pray. @binxwalton @anokyai @kristen_mcmenamy @naomi @lindaevangelista @the_real_iman #stevenmeisel #helenwilliams #naomisims #bonniebermanLikes : 3627

Vogue…for the most important issue of the year for fashion magazines is September…the choice to use the image of art representing a black female on two different covers is the ultimate “switch up”. I LOVE IT !!! Kerry James Marshall and Jordan Casteel @jordanmcasteel were both given complete freedom to decide who would be on their covers, a real or imaginary person, and how that person would be portrayed. Well Jordan Casteel chose my dear “daughter” Aurora James @aurorajames founder of Brother Vellies @brothervellies, who created her recent campaign in June @15percentpledge that supports Black-owned businesses. This is so “next level” because Aurora means a lot to me and now to the greater community…a true renaissance woman. Proud I am of Aurora beyond this cover, yet, yes I am, how elegant for an elegant spirit. I was so happily surprise by the cover I had to ask her “is this real”. ? How proud she must be to be recognized and honored in this way. Her image and the painting of Kerry James Marshall (so loved is he) are so elevated. I thank Anna Wintour @theannawintour and @voguemagazine for having this vision addressing our current consciousness. I am happy for the movement having a positive effect in this way. Caption : Good thought but in today’s climate that’s barely possible any longer. My mind goes to the mass shootings of recent in the USA. Being far away doesn’t change my emotional reaction to each one. One after another… I wish our leader of the free world presented differently to his audience so it wouldn’t seem to be suggesting to take the law into their own hands. Or for some to think there is something to “take back” or for a “minority” to fear and need to cage and control. It’s not easy to have a conversation with the leader of the free world, if you are not in agreement. That’s shown in WH news conferences, political rallies, meetings with opposing delegates. If a conversation that matters cannot be held on a world stage that others will see, what practice is being put into play for the “average Joe” ? What example is being practice to learn restraint, respect and to listen ? So now, before even a conversation, someone drives a great distance with a gun to just shoot people they never met, let alone a conversation. They are reverting back to no tolerance. If it disturbs you then disrupt. Be brave to start a conversation…You cannot have a difference of opinion, often the response is to attack not converse. Conversation that matter, ones that can get treated the same especially if you are courageous enough to have on any social media platform. But that’s a dangerous sport. Best to try it with intellectuals, students of academia, or children. In those cases you have a better chance of survival. After all said, there is nothing better than having a conversation that matters. Walking away knowing some thing was heard, understood and perhaps a difference was made. But it’s come down to “picking your battles” cause it depends on the “neighborhood”, who you are talking to. But no matter, be brave enough to share that point of view, that could help shift a community ultimately perhaps society.Likes : 3526

Caption : As this day ends…earlier today we celebrated and buried the body of George Floyd. There is not a lot to say, but now reflection and future thoughts for the movement. Whats important is to recognize the purpose of life. The effect one life or incident can spark at the right time. The support from others and continued recognition globally has allowed me to witness for the first time who has stepped along side in such numbers who are not only black. The Civil Rights movement had that vibe, but this is far greater. There is an understanding finally, more then ever before. So I clench a fist but recognizing the love that has been shown to help effect this change. Your life was taken Mr Floyd, but not in vain. Breathe now…rest in peace. 🖤 #6/9/20Likes : 3450

Caption : Going in 2020… It’s all about clarity and order. Surely being of fit mind and body, and a sense of what you want out of life and the work you must put into it to achieve a great result, should be the goal. It’s not all about good looks although it helps. But realizing that working hard to achieve one thing can lead you into another. Be clear…we all won’t get to the finish line as winners, but we all need not be winners to get there. It’s the life we choose and often times, it’s chosen for us. No matter how much we think and desire to be perfect, sometimes being successful or fit of sound mind and body, it just ain’t in the cards. Doesn’t mean game over. Just means often times, different game. So going forward let’s pick our lane, work towards what can be accomplished. Don’t look to see what others are doing unless you are bored with yourself. “Learn to run your own race” as my coach Palmer use to say. You lose precious time being concern, looking back, to the side or too far forward. Not meant to squash dreams, just the need to be in the realistic realm. Often times we are wasting time on desire and not recognizing ambition. Remember, “all that shines ain’t gold”. Bronze, silver even brass can be suffice. As long as you make it happen your way and you succeed to have a little that is yours, instead of a lot that ain’t. Be careful of biting off more than we can chew. It’s tricky times. And my United States is on a tilt. Be conscious. Be wise. Eyes in front. Meanwhile Happy Birthday @tysoncbeckford And a very special shout out to Rep. Hakeem Jeffries who spoke on the vote to impeach yesterday. @repjeffries, you were brilliant.Likes : 3282

Caption : NICK KAMEN…where to begin, as I drift through this sorrow and surprising grief… He has left this planet earth . Our closeness was birth out of belief and trust. Nick added confidence to start my agency in ‘84. It was 6 girls and 1 boy. He gave me the courage and conviction to start Bethann Management Co. Nick came to NY to meet agents and I was about to start my own and had just found the location. He was becoming popular in London where he was born to Scottish and Burmese parents. Him choosing me over others I will never forget. I had never had my own business, we both admitted to being nervous in our decision, me to have a agency and him hoping I could pull it off because I was his choice. Thank goodness I did. He remained in my life until he passed. As he became globally famous, as an image via Buffalo Clan, Ray Petrie, Laundromat commercial, a pop singer, Madonna producing his first song, both their first, in fact. All and all he kept me inspired and kept me in counsel. We saw each other every year when I visited London until he got sick in 2018 and even thereafter, in July ‘19, was the last time to see him. A nice lunch, afternoon in the park. A chat was created so all the dear friends were kept abreast as he lived through the illness. There were many hopeful moments. To love someone so long so clearly due to a pure heart of trust and respect is bliss. As young as he was then, he made me believe in me. He gave me the reins and I held the grip. It will take a bit of time to let this one go. Nick you hit many beats and cords as your beauty and coolness was astounding to so many, but your heart was the best. No doubt, all who know me, knows this one hurts. Need to finally acknowledge that he is gone from here…. 💙#nickkamenLikes : 3205

Caption : Happy Fourth of July to all who consciously observe the purpose of this American holiday. Its Independence Day. But more recently, slowly our personal independence and privacy is being tampered with. Take time to watch Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez here…re: Facial recognition data. But also be aware of “Deepfakes” a video app which House Rep. Yvette Clark (Brooklyn) is trying to get a bill pass that stops this technology that allows the user to distort the truth, confuse the public and make us question what is real and what is fake. It can create falsehood, without your consent. Speaker Pelosi was a target, misled viewers to believe she had been been drinking before a press conference. And lets not ignore those Immigration Detentions of all things…. If these are not clear signs of America going in a direction of concern and how much we need to be consciously aware of whats going on that we are sleeping on, it’s truly “Hola” time. Independence is not the word I am thinking of today, unless to recognition ours is slipping. So eat and drink up, do that 4th of July thing. But please be uncomfortable with what’s happening to our United States of America. Between our political administration and technology, we need to keep our heads up. Independence feels slippery. Meanwhile Happy July 4th. #awareness #aintallsohappyLikes : 3035

Caption : This Thanksgiving holiday of 2020 has given us all an enormous amount to ponder as we reflect on this year gone by. So much has happen to the world as we knew it. But mostly to our surrounding communities. If ever there was a time to sit quiet and think about our vulnerabilities, it’s been these months gone by. It has brought it to our knees, and if not, sit down and be still. Life is no longer the same as it was, people are dying in the thousands whether you knew them or not. It has its effect. This is the moment to become more simple in your thinking and expectations. Identify more with the common man. Be more generous with what you have, because many are suffering with having lost income, employment, housing and their good mental health. This is the time to think of others besides yourself, because you are equally as vulnerable perhaps with more of a cushion to fall upon. But to fall is to fall. It’s not from how high because it’s all relative. I am grateful for what I have achieved but more grateful for where I come from, far less than what I have. I have always believed in “keeping my feet on the ground”, an expression may it be, but more conscious to live it. I will always identify more from the neighborhood and community I come from then the world I have gotten to known and live. No matter what little or more I have I will always continue to give. May I always walk with the broken as I sit amongst the great. Because this is no time to feel better than another soul on earth. Lights out comes to all, no matter who you are or what you have. So stay in the realm of kindness and be grateful. And hope the only people you are better then are those who are mean and un-caring. Finish this year and beyond on a kind note.Likes : 3004

Caption : Today I celebrate….Joy, the memories of others and my present self. Every day I wake and smile at me. Things aren’t the way they were physically, healthy though I be, standing tall with shoulders back is a feat. Lower back reminds me of my time on earth. Other than that, it’s all so beautiful to witness another day, another year with little worries, what more to do than smile, the very first thing. “A lot of us didn’t make it this morning”…I often say, when asked how am I or when others complain about trivial things like the weather. How silly, I think. To live gratefully and to achieve is our purpose. As a child I always danced. Became a popular child tap dancer under the guide of the “hoofer” Duke Baldwin. I performed many places, even on the stage of The Apollo. Gene Kelly, Fred Astaire and the Nicholas Bros. were my inspiration. Tap dance was one thing but as I grew dance in general was almost everything to me. I could dance practically any dance. Salsa being my favorite. My parents were “jitterbuggers” so dance was in my DNA. All the good dance clubs died during 70’s 80’s, The Loft, Paradise Garage, Luviticus and Area. My first club as a teenager was the Latin Palladium on Broadway, it was everything. Dance is still everything. I dance at home, Salsa plays in the kitchen as I cook. But I learned just last night, that the club Cielo energy has carried on. There is a new location. That is how a birthday gift can come, in all shapes of knowledge, most are not tangible. So happy to learn a place nearby that will continue the spirit of Frankie Knuckles. I have Latin music at home so that will suffice. Today I celebrate me. Talking about dance reminds me of what’s necessary on many levels. The freedom of expression, our creative journeys, being in control of the outcome is just like dance. That said…a shout out to all my fellow Libras who are so creative and kind, enjoy this life, surely there is more on the other side. And to all other Zodiac signs, ditto. Caption : ALBER ELBAZ..the Moroccan born Israeli fashion designer who I have known since the late 80’s, I owe him my recognition. I had my model agency Bethann Management on N Moore St and Alber was the assistant to Geoffrey Beene. We supported each other. He liked a model I had name Roshumba and had me work with him to convince Mr Beene, as Mr Beene was no easy walk in the park. But after many “go-sees” Roshumba was accepted to do fittings, presentations, then shows. Alber and I had to be wise in maintaining this relationship with Mr Beene. Alber was thrilled that it worked. Eventually he left NY. Years later, I remember walking into an environment of fashion humans and heard my name loud in that distinctive Alber voice “Bethann”!!!…years had gone by, there he was, making it on his own. And he never forgot me. Mid 90’s the fashion industry started taking an unfortunate turn to the Caucasian “anonymous” model. By 2007 I was on my “bandwagon” reflecting this unfortunate turn as “not cool”. Alber was part of that fashion moment as well. Knowing he had risked his job years before for the inspiration of a black model. I reached out to him and he played semantics with me, talked in circles. I understood, it was that moment in fashion, that it was what it was. But thereafter when the tide slowly begin to turn, Alber discovered the lovely Kinee Diouf of Senegal in Paris and added her to his cabine. She was a modern version of Roshumba. Later, Alber allowed me to film, with a camera man, his Lanvin resort show in NY I think it was 2010 or after. I wanted to capture on film what was happening and not happening in the industry at that time. He and I discuss what I was witnessing and he took the high road and made light of it. But I knew Alber had the appetite for the model of color and when the market began to turn further, he stepped way up. After he left Lanvin, years later, I saw him in 2018 at the BoF conference in England, a voice yelled loud..“Bethann”!!!. Yes, once again it was Alber. Soar in peace, see you on the other side. #alberelbaz #gentlegiant #soulfulhumanLikes : 2934

Caption : My history with Interview Magazine has been deep and long due to my relationship with Andy Warhol and The Factory. I interviewed Iman @the_real_iman and she interviewed me, a duel interview for the magazine at Andy’s request, a personal assignment in the late 70’s or early 80’s with a special layout by photographer Ara Gallant, deceased. Later a feature in the late 90’s a great portrait by Torkil Gudnasson, maybe something else, cannot recall, but those were memorable Interview moments. And then came now….It’s really good to have lived long so when a moment like this happens you add it to the others that were special. Because there were many but few that were special on many levels. Having my young inspiration @zendaya who is “most likely to succeed”, interviewing me and the talent of artist @jacolbysatt photographed me and created the images. During this time of Covid we adhered to all the CDC guidelines and were met as the @interviewmag team came to my upstate NY home and we had an outdoor studio in the front yard of my home in July ‘20. It was another great moment in time. http://www.interviewmagazine.com/fashion/bethann-hardison-zendaya-saving-the-world-mission. @interviewmagazineus @melottenberg thank you 🌺Likes : 2932

Caption : Felicidades to Kamala Harris who is officially the VP nominee for the USA. Every little girl no matter the color of her skin should know this too is their moment. All of us “girls” are excited to see political progress for women during this significant week of the right for women to vote. But it wasn’t for all women. The advocacy of women of color like Fannie Lou Hamer and Denise Nash help lead the biggest voting victory for all, the Voting Rights Act of 1965. But voting suppression tactics, still exist. But still we celebrate as we should, because today belongs to Kamala Harris, and every single American. History has been made and we remain in respect and memory of those earlier advocates as we build on their legacies. So let us dance for joy, continue to wear your mask, and get all besides yourself to VOTE. @norah_yarah_rosa #byanymeansnecessary #thetimeisnow #voteforprogress #changethecourse #thereisnovaccineforracismLikes : 2864

Caption : ITS’s A BEAUTIFUL THING !!!…. We are so proud of our NAACP IMAGE Award. A great win… As I had my eye on that prize and it prevailed . Thank you NAACP for this acknowledgment and recognition. Always grateful to the wonderful IB doc team. I also want to thank ALL of you, the audiences who loved and shared your viewing experience with others, seeing it more than once and attending the theaters, keeping it there for eight weeks. Now its home is Hulu and also still can be seen on Amazon Prime. Continue to share telling others. Thank you. This is now the end of the awards season. Happy to end it with what we often refer to it as “our Oscars”. Its been a wonderful journey..and still going. @naacpimageawards @naacp @invisiblebeautyfilmLikes : 2850

Caption : February 29th is the birthday of designer Willi Smith, a leap year baby. Blessing is …the museum exhibit celebrating him will open at the Cooper Hewitt March 13th. This is his year. Though he passed in 1989…finally we celebrate. On this last day of Black History Month I share how proud I am of this, of him and another dear one in my life. Duro Olowu…his exhibition opening at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago on Thursday evening 2/27/20. Exceptional !!! What I am showing is a tiny slice of whats shown and it ain’t clothes. It’s some of the greatest contemporary artists, curated by Duro. Titled “Duro Olowu Seeing Chicago”. These two images that I took speaks more to me and about me, then the art being displayed. As it’s an enormous art show in size, this display shown reminded me of when Duro and I first worked together. His first New York fashion collection show we worked to cast and present, which happen three seasons consecutively. The talent of Duro is unimaginable, as it’s vast. Duro and Willi Smith would have loved each other. They have similar characteristics and capabilities. Just to say this fashion component is exceptional as is the art that surrounds it. It’s only a slither of the display but it’s the angles that I shot that allowed me to express my joy and what I could look like everyday. I am so proud that both exhibits are happening now and that I have been a part of their lives as they were in mine. True art…True talent.., With so many talented people of color in the arts, and other skilled executives that we never chance to see the work you achieve as it’s behind the scenes, still we see you and feel your spirits doing great things. As we face the unknown, do all to keep the immune system strong by eliminating bad and incorporating good habits. Conscious living is everything now and is for always. #timenottosleep #betterhabits @duroolowu #mca #willismith #williwear #cooperhewitt @acunninghamcameronLikes : 2658

Caption : On this International Women’s Day… I recognize Stacy Abrams who had the strength to run for office in her state of Georgia. And she came close to winning. Now she fights to eliminate voters suppression. It’s takes me back to when people of color were not allowed to vote, or once they could, made so difficult, the vote couldn’t be counted. Rights seem to come and go for the poor and people of color. I heard recently if you were incarcerated, your right to vote exist. But for years I had heard that right was lost once you went to prison it was “a wrap”. Stacy Abrams is a brilliant example of the Harriet Tubman and Sojourner Truth of today. As she honors the rights of all to vote, I honor her commitment to fight to correct systemic desire to cheat. Her desire to be the President of this country as a woman of color says everything about her strength and conviction. No matter what she achieves I am just happy she exists. Reminding others of what’s possible and their personal responsibility. #vote #helpothersvote #getoutthevote2020 #stacyabramsLikes : 2635

Caption : Ramadan had a wonderful end. And then you slowly learn of the violence, killings, raping of girls and women, the continued destruction of the Sudan. The shame of a military driven to harm its citizens as they demonstrate peacefully. The shutdown of the internet as they privately punish people, burn homes, gang-raping demonstrators and medical personnel. PLEASE PRAY FOR THE SUDAN PLEASE LET OTHERS KNOW…. We must not remain quite as this continues. Image by :Moroccan artist/photographer @mouslamrabat @dr.azra (henna) Thank you for the images in support and against these atrocities. 🙏🏾🇸🇩Likes : 2573
