Eric Whitacre Instagram - My dear friend of 33 years, poet Tony Silvestri, is quite ill. He has given SO much to all of us writing poetry for dozens of beloved pieces and composers. (For me he wrote the lyrics to Sleep, Lux Aurumque, Leonardo Dreams, and The Sacred Veil to name just a few). Now is the time for us to give a little back. If you are able to give anything at all to help him in his very long and difficult recovery, his family ā€”and I ā€” would be incredibly grateful. Eric Whitacre Instagram - The great Peter Schickele (aka P.D.Q. Bach) died earlier this month. What a tremendous loss for classical music. He took the air out of stuffy classical music in the most erudite way, endlessly inventive and laugh-out-loud funny way. Thank you, Maestro, for all of the laughter and joy.
Eric Whitacre Instagram - Louisville! I am here this week to perform the Mozart Requiem, The Sacred Veil, and The River Cam with the @louisvilleorchestra and singers from the University of Louisville and Voces Novae. It has been a magical week ā€” the musicians and staff are SO good, and such lovely people. Conducting the Mozart Requiem is something Iā€™ve dreamed of doing since I first sang it 35 (!) years ago with my mentor, David Weiller. This piece (and David) changed my life, and is the reason I am composer and conductor. And to make it even more special, my wife @laurence_servaes is singing the soprano solos, and she is performing from my original choral score, the one that I used with David. Two concerts, tomorrow night (Friday) in Indiana and Saturday in Louisville. šŸ™šŸ»šŸ™šŸ»šŸ™šŸ»

We will perform my Christmas opera Gift of the Magi, Lux Aurumque, Glow, and even The Seal Lullaby (which feels like Christmas). What other pieces should I include? They donā€™t have to be written by me ā€” in fact the more new holiday music the better!

The musicians, the staff, the audiences, the supporters were endlessly generous and gracious, and in just a short time my family and I felt completely welcomed and at home. THANK YOU Louisville!! We canā€™t wait to come back.

(A friend of ours from Europe said her kids recognized him from pictures we were sending, saying, ā€œThatā€™s Squishy Paws!ā€). Carson, we miss you!
