My thoughts on why #Longlegs became so popular and still has people talking. It’s because of not only great writing & directing by @osgoodperkins, but the acting overall, Nicolas Cage, @maikamonroe @blairunderwood_official but the standout is @aliciawitty as Ruth. (Spoilers folks, tread no further). Witt’s portrayal as Ruth is one of the best I’ve ever seen, but I’m not a movie critic. I’ve seen people like Ruth my whole life. I’ve lived with them, and then when I worked in psychiatric care & then law enforcement, I saw a lot of people just like Ruth, and yes, that included murderers. I’ve met a solid couple of dozen people who took the life of another in various & always brutal methods. I used to hear the word “evil” a lot, and like many I met & spent a lot of time with daily, Ruth wasn’t evil. Ruth was portrayed as troubled, vulnerable, and backed into a corner as she saw it. The first murderer I met, killed his wife because, he was troubled & felt he was backed into a corner. I spent 8 months almost daily with that man. I had to remind myself that despite him being likeable, he had murdered his wife 2 feet from his then 12 year old daughter. Witt’s portrayal of Ruth was so grounded, because she played her as someone capable of both good/bad, because that’s how people are in reality. I have met some you could describe as evil & I would agree, no conscience of any kind, but it was rare.
It’s in some religions that evil is seen as a line to be drawn in the sand, one & not the other. Whereas others view it differently, Native Americans for the most part have no concept of hell, but instead view an upper world & an underworld, which is below the water they view as sinister but that they must balance themselves between the two and that any acknowledgement of the heavens must be balanced with an acknowledgement of water spirts. This equilibrium maintained a balance between the upperworld and the underworld. There can be no good without the bad, and one cannot exist without the other. It’s rare to see this on film in characters these days, but Witt’s portrayal of Ruth was as equally great & heartbreaking at the same time & should be praised. | Posted on 16/Sep/2024 22:14:57
