In the early hours of Tuesday, 10th September 2024, Israel bombed a ‘safe camp’ in the al-Mawasi area. The airstrike targeted 20 tents and was so intense that it left a crater 9 metres deep.
*Update* Gaza’s health ministry have updated this number to 19, with more missing and presumed dead. The 60 injured remained unchanged.
At least 40* people have been killed, over 60 injured, and others remain missing, buried in the sand. Nearly half of Gaza’s population is now residing in the al-Mawasi area, with many people living in tents, believing this to be a safe zone.
Israel claims it hit a ‘Ham/s Command Centre’ located at the camp.
It should be noted that this is the same excuse Israel has used to bomb every hospital in Gaza, over 160 schools, more than 70% of homes, every university, international aid vehicles, ambulances, bakeries, falafel stands, horse-drawn carts, and even mothers carrying babies.
Even if there were a command centre at the camp, this is a ‘safe zone’—one that Israel instructed Palestinians to move to for safety. It was past midnight, people were asleep, and Israel bombed the area with such force that it ensured no man, woman, or child would wake to see the sunrise. There is no reality where Israel can claim this as self-defence, nor can they justify this as a ‘targeted strike’ on Hamas. This was a calculated act of violence, designed to further punish the civilian population in Gaza.
