ok so first off i’ll say – personal carbon footprints are an engineered distraction to make you blame yourself for what huge companies are doing – BUT – ai specifically – at all levels – needs to clean up its act with regard to emissions.
.
many models get smaller and more optimized by the open source community while huge companies tend to train huge-dataset models that establish entirely new areas of exploration for the field to begin making improvements. or that’s kind of how i see it.
.
big companies are big companies and we see inefficiency everywhere. contrarily, open source folks are generally waaaaay better at making models smaller and more efficient to run.

enter this new guy – flux.1.
flux.1 is a free, local image synthesis model. it makes images from text. yeah yeah yeah. but ! it’s really lovely. it has an “eye”. and you can run it on your laptop for free. you can disconnect from the internet and still generate anything you want. it is a 20gb model and you can make pictures of anything. you can explore your mind’s eye.

it is – in my opinion – a deeply good and important personal exploration for everyone to do. it is becoming really developmentally critical to accept this pandora’s box. to dive in – somehow – at this point in time.

running flux.1 on my own computer is a huge personal pollution reduction for my ai dream synthesis. it’s a little bit of a pain to set up – but if you have a mac like me i can walk you through it over a quick zoom call. technically i get nothing out of that other than seeing people light up when they actually try this monumental technology out for the first time. when they take some ownership of the potentials it can represent for them. my favorite feeling in the world. hmu folks | Posted on 14/Aug/2024 05:34:53
