Beverly Joubert Instagram – Copy/paste. In almost perfect symmetry, these zebras lined up at the water’s edge to quench their thirst. At first glance they may appear identical, like monochromatic duplicates, but like all zebras, each individual has its own unique stripe pattern – an intricate artwork of back and white brushstrokes that separates it from the rest of the herd. Some theories suggest these unique coats help the animals identify one another and may offer an explanation, at least in part, for why these animals have stripes in the first place – a question that researchers have struggled to definitively answer for as long as they’ve been trying. Whatever the reasons for their iconic patterned fur, it certainly makes for dazzling displays when herds gallop in unison across the savannah.
