As of 2022, a staggering 468 million children live in war zones. Worse still, prolonged conflicts have changed the dangers children face and the type of support and assistance they need.
Many children experience serious challenges living under conflict because of three critical reasons:
1) A lack of compliance by parties to the conflict with international rules, laws and norms;
2) Those parties or individuals who hurt children often don’t get punished; and
3) There aren’t strong enough support systems to make sure children recover after surviving a crisis.
Boys and girls living under conflict also have distinctly different experiences. Girls face a greater risk of sexual violence and forced marriage, while boys are more likely to suffer physical harms like being killed, injured, or abducted. Often people pay more attention to the problems boys face in public, ignoring the dangers girls face privately, such as sexual abuse.
It can also be hard to track and report these violations – due to limited access and safety concerns – leading to many cases going unnoticed. To solve this, we need to work together to challenge traditional ideas, promote fairness between genders, and make sure all children are safe and cared for.
