Elif Şafak Instagram – At the British Museum, this was an extraordinary event with the great Mary Beard. Flanked by remarkable lamassu sculptures, we talked about my new novel #thereareriversinthesky We talked about some of the central themes in the book, including cultural heritage and memory, and how these massive sculptures of Ancient Mesopotamian civilisations have ended up in the British museum. We discussed at length how leading museums today need to engage in the important debate about the complexities and mistakes of the past and how they also need to actively engage in finding a new inclusive narrative and a constructive way forward with regards to the future of these beautiful artefacts. We talked about some of the most complex and urgent and universal issues, including questions about cultural preservation, repatriation and international collaboration. Literature can be a calm and nuanced space to open up the most pressing issues of our times. Thank you for this magical evening.
