The art for heart of gold was taken with my dear friends/family @baylie_olsen and @mccall_olsen and a new friend @trelenjohnston in a dance studio/ converted garage in part run by the dance community of @heavy__boots big thanks to @layne_willis .
It was effortlessly styled by gifts from @styledbybruce & @matthewpandolfe when we collided to dream in Miami, and the makeup was done messily by @baylie_olsen and I to harken back to a rare portrait of my favorite artist, Nina Simone, who’s iconic golden star look is seen smeared and sweaty, glitter falling onto her cheeks post performance.
I wrote the song with close friends @trace and @_ryanhughes , and embellished with the community and long time friendship of @lohariel and magic of @theyneedacrane on the drums.
The intimacy, safety, and presence of queer people and allies when writing anything is crucial for me but this song was written in my rock bottom, and I am so grateful to the intentional curation of people who held me through the healing process to its delivery.
What’s coming next in my debut EP is a true expression of who I am without the things that held me back. But this song had to be written to shake some of those things off, and I am so excited to release it into the hands of people who need it now.
I’m sure you’re gearing up for the “song of the summer” but sad things happen to people even in the spring so I hope this song will be good company to you
