Mariah Strongin Instagram – Just a few years ago, my family was forced to evacuate from their homes in my hometown of Medford, Oregon due to wildfires. During that massive blaze, my family was centered between three simultaneous fires converging on their locations. My step dad, as well as many of my former neighbors and friends, lost not only their homes, but also many non-replicable memories. I vividly remember being aware of this environmental threat each Spring and Summer growing up.
It was only later that I learned that most of the wildfires were started not through natural causes, but by reckless human behavior. Today, on @smokeybear’s 80th birthday and as Oregon and the rest of the West Coast heads into the height of fire season, I want to celebrate his birthday by sharing some fire prevention tips and remind everyone to pay attentions to help prevent wildfires.
1. If you are camping and light a fire, remind yourself of Smokey Bear’s fire danger level and ensure your fire is completely out and cold before departing. If you can feel heat coming emanating from the embers, drown it in cold water.
2. Make sure your cigarette butts are completely out before leaving them and do not throw them out of your car or into brush.
3. If you see any type of spark coming from a truck or trailer chains, please alert the vehicle’s driver, as it only takes one spark during the dry season to start a wildfire.
