Minnie Mills Instagram – (3/3) Escaping North Korea is a long, difficult journey, but the challenges do not end upon arrival into South Korea. Refugees have described arriving in South Korea as alike to being catapulted 60 years into the future overnight: they must learn how to use ATMs, the internet, ride the subway, and interact with the technologies that have become integrated into everyday life. Furthermore, coming from a society where choice is restricted and dictated at every turn the abundance of choice can be overwhelming: from schooling, to career, to finding and building a community there are so many decisions to make that they may have never even considered. In addition to this, North Koreans must also unlearn much of the propaganda that they have been fed about the outside world, as well as understand and face the stressors and trauma that result from living in and escaping from one of the most oppressive regimes in the world.
I have long believed that providing specific aid based on the needs they express gives refugees the tools to thrive in their new environments and pursue their passions, and is one of the keys to solving the issues that necessitated their escape. The North Korean people are a shining example of the incredible capability refugees have to succeed and thrive given the right support, and I am constantly inspired by the determination of North Korean refugees and the risks they take to give back to and help their fellow North Koreans and change the way the world sees North Korea.
