Jena Malone Instagram – I didn’t like their eyes on me
The older boys
But I still played their kissing games in the dark of the laundry mat
We, the unmothered, were an army
fighting against ourselves
Small , practicing defiance
Some games turned violent.
My head pushed against the wall
Knees burned
from the ancient carpet
In the hallways
where
We dog piled til death
5 condominiums
of feral children
Two dirt stained pools
A field of aspen
Off a dead end road that could lead to the lake
If you knew , you knew
I refused to brush my hair
Standing 4 foot 2
In my jelly half heels
in the middle of winter
We barely ate breakfast indoors
Kitchen counter thieves
Traded oranges
And plastic bags of koolaid
With the edges knawed off
Feeding
My girlhood rage
My mouth stained
Spare change
From the sidewalk gutters
And my older brothers closet
Scavenged
For the lady who sold candy
From her second story apartment
Pan dulce Sunday’s
sometimes
I went so hungry I would hallucinate skeletons dancing in the dimly lit stairways.
