The blue ridge mountains have always been mysterious to me. Over the years of touring and back and forth travel, western North Carolina has always felt welcoming and safe. I’d land and in just a matter of days returning home I would feel alive and grounded, cradled by this nest of lush and expanding plant-life…I talked highly of it to friends and strangers around the world, always expressing how special it was to me, how it’s been a restful and healing place for so many people.
But in the wake of Hurricane Helene many of those whose ancestors are the backbone and culture of this place I’ve held so dear will have to leave for good-many are still stuck in the holler and unable to care for themselves, have lost their homes, have still not been able to find their loved ones..and then there are many still who’ve always been without homes, who have had to rely on the charity of others during a time when everyone, even the most privileged are suffering and the infrastructure itself has collapsed. This is why I’ve always come back to and continue to support nonprofits such as @belovedasheville in Asheville, NC, -because not only are they distributing resources to those most affected by Hurricane Helene, but they have always had an interest in the wellbeing of those who may not have the legal position or access to the kind of shelter so many of us have the privilege to demand.
