Four years ago, Lailaa and I were sitting on the couch watching with pride as Kamala Harris was sworn in as the first female Vice President in history. I remember turning to Lailaa and saying “see, now you too can become Vice President” only to have her respond “why couldn’t I before?”
Lailaa and her entire generation have grown up in a world of endless possibilities; where boxes and limitations didn’t exist; where regardless of one’s race, religion, gender, or beliefs, we are all viewed as equals and as humans.
Now, sitting on this same couch 4 years later with Lailaa and her two younger brothers, that world is at risk. Our family where my kids have two moms and other families like ours out there are in danger. As a parent, I can’t sit idly by and allow that to happen. I can’t imagine looking my children in their eyes and saying we failed them along with the rest of their generation.
I’m proud to live in a country where Lailaa can grow up with all of the same goals, dreams, and unlimited aspirations as her brothers. But now it’s up to us to protect that.
Four years from now, Lailaa will be voting in her first Presidential Election. I hope she has the opportunity to re-elect Kamala Harris for President. Not just because she is a woman, but because she is the right person for the job and the HUMAN who will fight to restore and protect the rights for women, children, and humans all across this country.
