Kat Cunning Instagram – Today is my actual birthday, and the 7th day since Trumps re-election
My coping has been a cabaret
I went and sang Gloomy Sunday in response to a last minute invite to do so from a charming rockstar who played my bio-dad
In a movie
It was a room full of stars
And a couple hopefuls scatting
And while this was not how we could have imagined the first day of a trump presidency to go
We were surprised by how much joy it brought us to be in a room where people show their hearts
And their asses
Not addressing the addresses but
Singing tunes you know came out of pains like this
Released subversively through magical worlds
Like somewhere over the rainbow
And don’t rain on my parade
Since then I’ve been
making art of my face and wearing my grandfathers watch as a choker
inviting friends from all corners very last minute
To come and
See
Bodies
Joyfully moving
As if they aren’t threatened
Because they will not
Obey in advance
Or hand over their autonomy
Fearfully
I brought a bouquet of roses and gave them out at random to people in the club.
It’s a tradition of mine when roses are given to me
because I don’t need to watch
20 roses die
But to hold one
makes anybody
feel alive
And as was my bday wish
I woke up the next day and decided to host the people who could come and play Mafia.
It was somehow cathartic
To dance with the idea of bias and
Trial
And popular opinion
Right or wrong
Knowing that the game ends
And the villains are just players
Dipping their pizza in ranch
And saying hello for the first time
As themselves
The guy who delivered the alcohol for the party came with his wife and they shivered while waiting for an ID.
We asked how their night was going
And that tiny gesture prompted them to offer us
two bouquets of roses
As a gift
Sometimes it feels like you lose everything in the blink of an eye
And sometimes
You get what you give
Two dozen
Times over.
