Daddy, thank you for the life you gave me. Yesterday we celebrated your 73rd birthday. Until we meet again champ. His love for everyone is evident by the large gathering here today. One word comes to mind when I think of my Dad that perfectly encapsulates his imprint on this earth – the word – Legend. Heroes may be remembered, but legends like Joe live on forever in our hearts as champions and heroes. To me, my father was truly legendary in every aspect – his mind, actions, and heart. He loved mayonnaise – but it had to be Bama mayonnaise! He introduced me to the delightful combination of banana and peanut butter sandwiches with it. He liked to sing really loud in church and he always held my hand. He knew how to make anything fun and he always made you feel like you were the only person in the room. His brown eyes were the kindest, and glowed with a special light. His hands and feet were the cutest, and if he liked a meal a lot he would do a happy dance. Our whole life he built with us the most intricate sandcastles (cars, alligators, dinosaurs) and we always thought it was because he liked sand and playing, but it was really because he wanted to get his back tanned. He taught me patience with how much patience he had with me. He forgave me for every mistake, every failure, every single car wreck, and there were a lot! He was always disciplined, and we joked he was my personal master sensei. He was my biggest fan and always there to coach me for executive Amazon and Microsoft meetings as well as to help me read lines for a big audition in a movie or show. We loved to envision big strategies together. And when life threw me a curve ball, as it always does especially because I lived in LA and NYC, he showed me what it meant to have discipline, endure pain with a smile and keep on climbing the mountain of life, as he was always a true all-star, on and off the field. He always told me, “Chele attitude determines altitude.” And as the GOAT, Nick Saban says, “Becoming a champion is not an easy process. It is done by focusing on what it takes to get there — and not on getting there.” Dad believed that and led by example, always putting others before himself.
