Ayden Mayeri is no stranger to the absurd. She’s portrayed an unhinged Pilates instructor and pasta-cult victim in films like ‘Jackpot!’ and ‘Spin Me Round.’ But nothing could have prepared her for her recent foray into music, all thanks to her younger self. Moodily dubbing themselves X-Cetra, a tween Mayeri and three neighborhood friends made a guest-room-produced LP reminiscent of the Spice Girls with a “haunted German sound” in 2000. Scooped up at the thrift store by random punkheads, the album would later earn rave reviews online, landing Mayeri and her friends a record deal more than 20 years later. For CULTURED, the comedian sat down with frequent collaborator Alison Brie to chart the happy accidents that have dotted her film and new music career—including the fateful, half-stoned call that brought the two creatives together in the first place. From flaming dildos to tough theater instructors, nothing was off the table in their candid conversation about breaking into the industry, Marvel stunt teams, and where they might cross paths next.
