The total number of Palestinians who have died of hypothermia in Gaza in one week has now reached seven, including six babies. This number is expected to rise as temperatures continue to plummet and the majority of Gaza’s population is forced to live in makeshift shelters and tents.
“We have warned more than once of the danger of air depressions, winter and frost waves coinciding with the tragic reality experienced by our Palestinian people who are being subjected to killings, genoc/de and the destruction of homes and vital sectors, and who are being subjected to displacement and eviction,” stated the Gaza Media Office.
Aid groups worldwide are warning that nearly a million people in Gaza lack adequate shelter to survive the winter, with temperatures dropping as low as 6°C (42°F).
Israel’s relentless bombardment has left fewer buildings standing in Gaza this winter, forcing Palestinians, who have repeatedly fled Israeli attacks, to seek refuge in makeshift tents constructed from tarpaulin, blankets, cardboard, and old rice sacks. Basic shelter materials such as tarps, plastic sheeting, and insulation remain largely unavailable due to Israel’s blockade of essential goods.
The Norwegian Refugee Council reported that by late November, only 285,000 displaced Palestinians in Gaza had received critical shelter materials, leaving 945,000 still in urgent need. UNRWA chief Philippe Lazzarini highlighted the dire situation, revealing that “blankets, mattresses and other winter supplies have been stuck in the region for months waiting for approval to get into Gaza.”
