Danielle Robay Instagram – I am a product of the conversations that have happened in this room. So many of us are. Gloria Steinem’s living room was a hub for the feminist movement—a crucible for ideas that reshaped history and the birthplace of Ms. Magazine.
It’s also where her famous “talking circles” began—a powerful testament to the transformative impact of shared stories and deep listening. Inspired by indigenous traditions, these circles emphasize equality, connection, and mutual respect. In a world dominated by top-down discussions and debates, the talking circle offers a refreshing alternative: a space where every voice matters.
Gloria has always said, “𝙔𝙤𝙪 𝙘𝙖𝙣’𝙩 𝙚𝙢𝙥𝙤𝙬𝙚𝙧 𝙬𝙤𝙢𝙚𝙣 𝙬𝙞𝙩𝙝𝙤𝙪𝙩 𝙡𝙞𝙨𝙩𝙚𝙣𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙩𝙤 𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙞𝙧 𝙨𝙩𝙤𝙧𝙞𝙚𝙨.” And she has lived by that. Whether sitting in a women-only train car in India or standing alongside Korean peace activists at the DMZ, Gloria has shown up again and again—not to lead the conversation but to amplify the voices of those who need to be heard.
Even after sixty years, Gloria Steinem remains at the forefront of the feminist movement, giving women a space to share their honest stories. I was really honored to be in that living room, learning from Gloria and all of the women who are advocates for social change– in the mud day in and day out, lobbying, writing laws, working tirelessly to make our lives better.
After we talked for two hours we pulled out the Question Everything card game and gathered around Gloria, scattered around her chair, at her feet. It was giving sleepover ☺️. I asked her how many times she’s been in love…we all talked and laughed and shared. I feel like we were celebrating what Gloria has always embodied: the magic of conversation as a tool for understanding, empathy, and ultimately connection…which changes the world. @keely_cat_wells thank you for gathering us. You are the epitome of sisterhood.
Leaving you with one of my favorite Gloria quotes that I think exemplifies who she is and what she stands for: “There is no one torch—there are many torches.”
