I’m thankful for my family,my health,my friends..for LIFE.
Thanksgiving has always given me PTSD.I remember going to Jamaica Ave with grandma and the grocery cart,to buy all the ingredients days prior.
Evelyn(my grandmother) worked so hard to make a feast,and I was her little helper.
The home smelled incredible the morning of,and then my hippy parents and all the family would gather.Drinks served,and politics came into discussion.
My parents were liberals,and grandma was a staunch Republican.She loved Nixon and Regan.Meanwhile,my parents were dragging me on Vietnam peace marches.
” Make love not war” & peace ☮️ signs ,sown onto my jeans.Arguements would ensue,and half way through dinner ,fights would be so epic and dinner was OVER.
Grandma would be in tears,and I would clean up,putting the dusty bible that was taken out 2x a year for prayer ,back.(lapsed Catholics)
I thought to my young self,how stupid adults were to fight on such a lovely occasion.
Years later,my boyfriend didn’t show up after I cooked my 1st T-Day.I was so upset as I had worked so hard to make it nice.Then, my own children as they got older, became ‘woke’ and understood that we didn’t do right by the American Indians…deal breaker.
Husband is Italian and hates turkey ,stuffing& pumpkin(sweet potato) so we tried variations to make it taste different 🤣.
Today I pray no one fights.Keep it mind that we still just need to be grateful and respect one another no matter what!
