Evangeline Lilly Instagram – It’s Christmas Eve! My little boy is electric with excitement. It’s 7:25am and he can not be still. He’s downstairs in the kitchen pacing and walking vigorously in circles, talking his daddy’s head off. 🤗 He has even read his dad a 15th century Child Ballad about Mary and Joseph called The Cherry Tree Carol. He read it beautifully!
The magic of Christmas is undeniable, and yet I find that, raising my children “non-religious” has taken some of the meaning out of Christmas. I hear talk of Santa and presents 🎁, fun and joy, but it seems that peace and good will toward all people has been lost. When I was little, those were the primary focus of the holiday season everywhere I went: school, church, and even stores and advertising. This year, my son’s Christmas concert at school had absolutely no reference to the meaning of Christmas – they didn’t talk about giving, about charity, about resolving differences, choosing grace, about peace on earth…
In the face of all the evil done in the name of religion, I love all religion for what it does bring us – meaning and a focus on the things unseen. I want to do more at Christmas to keep the focus away from material things and, instead, on the Spirit, but when the rest of my society seems to have lost sight of the Spirit and let consumerism fill the void left behind, it can be hard.
