The Montreal Biosphere, originally designed by architect Buckminster Fuller, was built as the United States pavilion for Expo 67 (which is pretty wild to read about but too long for this post). Located on Île Sainte-Hélène, the geodesic dome was all but destroyed by a fire in 1976 that completely destroyed its acrylic outer shell in under 15 minutes, but left the steel framework intact. It reopened in 1995 as an environmental museum dedicated to sustainability and ecological education.
