Issue 004, “Strange World,” is here, and with it, cover star and Emmy-award-winning actress @AyoEdebiri. The self-proclaimed “jester” and writer turned actress is still in the whirlwind of fame that came with an astounding and forceful speed. In its wake, and like many of us, Ayo is finding her footing in this weird world.
“I get to express myself through my work. My work is the thing. So I do the work. And then all of a sudden, it’s not about the work, and it’s about how people perceive you. It’s very, very strange,” Ayo shares with novelist and fellow wunderkind Yaa Gyasi.
It is fitting that Ayo is in conversation with Yaa, mulling over what it feels like to navigate a world that at once feels full of promise and full of challenges, as this issue aims to capture a more specific point of view, turning its gaze toward Black women.
In a moment where Black women seem to be at the center of public consciousness, we ask, who is more familiar than Black women with what it means to navigate a world of oddities?
