Barbara Corcoran Instagram – The morning of 9/11 is now already 23 years ago, and it shattered the hearts of every New Yorker. Like the rest of the world, we sat in silence watching TV to try to make sense of the news unfolding. But unlike everyone else, New Yorkers also watched the armored trucks rolling down fifth avenue against the constant sirens of ambulences.
I vividly remember the compaywide sales meeting I called for that Friday at the Pierre Hotel. Everyone was there. A thousand of us gathered all holding hands to sing “God Bless America”. We cried as we poured our souls into the words, hoping we might somehow help heal the devastation around us.
New Yorkers sang together again that night in Times Square. I stood with thousands of strangers who seemed to come together spontaneously, with voices raw singing the most heartfelt tribute of the same song. We were overwhelmed by our profound love of our city and bound together through the bond of appreciation we felt for those brave people who lost their lives. Brothers and sisters, parents and children and the brave firefighters with their firehouses already draped with shrouds. It seemed everyone lost someone they had loved.
I still feel deep sorrow and profound gratitude for our fellow New Yorkers and their absence weighs on me today. I still feel the common bond we all found in our great city then, so very long ago.
