CA Palak Rathi Instagram – Know this before you buy medicines!
Medicines have symbols on their packaging that are mandated by the government. Here are 5 symbols that give important information about how the medicine should be used.
Rx:
This symbol means the medicine can only be purchased and taken if a doctor has prescribed it. It’s not available without a prescription.
NRx:
This is similar to Rx but is found on stronger medicines, often containing narcotic substances. These are used for conditions that need close supervision by a doctor.
Red Box:
If you see a red box around the label or information, it’s a warning. It means you should not take this medicine without proper medical advice.
Veg/Non-Veg Sign:
While this symbol is not usually seen on regular medicines, it is mandatory on dietary supplements (which are categorized under food products). So as per FSSAI rules, a green dot indicates the product is vegetarian, and a brown dot means it’s non-vegetarian.
GMP (Good Manufacturing Practices):
This symbol shows that the medicine was manufactured following strict quality and safety standards outlined in Schedule M of the Drugs and Cosmetics Rules, 1945. However, if GMP symbol is missing, but the license number of the manufacturer is mentioned (which is compulsory btw), then that’s also enough.
