Who remembers the Terri Schiavo case? In 1990, Terri suffered a cardiac arrest, which left her in a permanent vegetative state. Her family was thrust into a 15-year legal battle, with her husband arguing that Terri wouldn’t have wanted her life prolonged without hope of recovery, while her parents fought to continue life-sustaining care. After years of heart-wrenching debate, her feeding tube was permanently removed in 2005. The Terri Schiavo case ignited a national and international discussion on quality of life, the right to die, and end-of-life care. It also had a profound impact on advance care planning. In fact, after her passing, downloads of living will forms from the U.S. Living Will Registry and Aging with Dignity websites surged over 1,000-fold.
