Fabienne Colas Instagram – #AmazingNews: Words are too poor to express my gratitude, humility and pride in sharing my appointment to the #OrderOfCanada by her Excellency the Right Honourable Mary Simon, Governor General of Canada – one of Canada’s highest honours. 🙏

Receiving this top honor alongside changemakers such as Ryan Reynolds, Laurent Duvernay-Tardif & others, makes this even more special http://bit.ly/4iJgQ2z

You know, advocating for Diversity & Inclusion in the arts and in society as a Black Woman Immigrant, leading Black arts organizations, is no easy endeavor.

Nevertheless, after a very impactful, but challenging, year, I had decided to rather count our blessings. We’ve celebrated the 20th anniversary of both the Fabienne Colas Foundation & the Montreal Intl Black Film Festival – with Spike Lee as the Honorary President – showcasing & mentoring hundreds of artists. Most of all, we had acquired the Colas Theatre (formerly Cartier Theatre) reopening in 2027.

I was also grateful to have received a Honorary Doctorate from Concordia University’s Faculty of Fine Arts (alongside #Dune Filmmaker Denis Villeneuve), as well as the King Charles III Coronation Medal at Senate of Canada by Hon. Amina Gerba and the Usher of the Black Rod, Mr. J. Greg Peters, representing the King of England.

But #NEVER could I have anticipated a call from the Office of the Secretary to the Governor General of Canada, announcing my appointment to the #OrderOfCanada! It is quite a privilege and a huge honor for me as a proud Haitian-Canadian-Quebecer-Montrealer and for my community.

“A leading figure in Canada’s cultural diversity, Fabienne Colas has dedicated herself to promoting diversity and inclusion in film, art and culture, in Canada and abroad. Through the Fabienne Colas Foundation, she has been a driving force behind the creation of incubators, training programs, events and festivals that have showcased thousands of artists of African descent across North America.”

This recognition encourages me to continue building more bridges through the arts for a more diverse and inclusive future – now more than ever.
