Greta Thunberg Instagram – Western Sahara is the biggest remaining UN recognized colony in the world and the 50 year long Moroccan occupation is severely underreported.
.
When Morocco invaded and occupied Western Sahara in 1975 they forced thousands of Saharawis to flee to Algeria where they have been living in refugee camps ever since. Almost 200 000 refugees are living under severe humanitarian conditions, with extreme lack of water and food in 60 degree summers.
.
The territory of Western Sahara is divided by the world’s longest active millitary wall, surrounded by around ten million landmines. The wall was built by Morocco with the help of Israel and separates the families in the occupied territories and in the refugee camps. The people in the occupied territories are facing regular arrests and torture, just for gathering and protesting.
.
Since the war started again in 2020, thousands of Saharawis have again been made refugees – fleeing from indiscriminate bombardment by Israeli, Turkish and Chinese drones that Morocco is using. Foreign companies, such as Siemens Gamesa, are green washing the occupation by running renewable energy projects in the occupied territories. The majority of the shares are owned by the Moroccan king.
.
The struggle for climate justice must include the Saharawi people. No one is free until everyone is free.
