Greta Thunberg Instagram – The Genocide Convention was adopted by the UN General Assembly 76 years ago, on 9 December 1948. It establishes the obligations of the 153 states that have ratified or acceded to the Convention to prevent and punish the crime of genocide. Genocide means:
a) Killing members of the group
b) Causing serious physical or mental harm to members of the group
c) Deliberately inflicting on the group conditions of life calculated to bring about its physical destruction, in whole or in part
d) Imposing measures calculated to prevent the birth of children within the group
e) Forcibly transferring children of the group to another group
According to a new report from Amnesty International, they conclude that Israel is committing genocide against Palestinians in Gaza. The report describes how Israel’s military offensive since 7 October 2023 has led to systematic destruction, mass killings and intolerable living conditions for the inhabitants of Gaza. Over 42,000 Palestinians, including 13,300 children, have been killed, and more than 97,000 have been injured. Israel has deliberately annihilated Palestinians through bombings, forced displacement, blockade of humanitarian aid and destruction of infrastructure.
– Israel treats Palestinians as an inferior group without rights or dignity, says Agnes Callamard from Amnesty.
The report also shows how international actors, by continuing to arm Israel, risk becoming complicit in this genocide. Amnesty is demanding immediate action from the countries of the world to stop the disaster.
Yesterday was 76 years since the Genocide Convention was adopted. At the UN, New York, there was talk of the previous genocides but no one in the assembly even mentioned Gaza. This resulted in great disappointment and frustration among the listeners in the audience.
