Iman Instagram – I met Mary McFadden in 1976 through the late photographer Peter Beard. We immediately connected through our shared interests in travel, particularly her love for Africa. She saw me as a “classic beauty”, which took me by surprise, as I had never been considered a beauty, let alone a classic one, while growing up!
She had a way of blending historical, classical lines with a regal modern touch. Her clothes reflected her unique style and interests, serving as an extension of how she existed in the world. The clean lines were inspired by distant cultures and eras long past, far removed from New York.
“I’m not a draping artist. My construction is simple, flat, one-dimensional. I’m interested in limiting bulk, in a total spareness of finishing..The effect I’m searching for is to have the fabric fall like liquid gold against the body.”
