India’s dairy industry often exploits cows and buffalos through practices such as excessive milking, forced breeding, and the separation of calves from their mothers shortly after birth. Cows are typically kept in overcrowded, unsanitary conditions with limited grazing, leading to physical and psychological stress. Many are subjected to artificial insemination to maintain constant lactation, which can cause health issues like mastitis. Male calves, seen as less valuable, are often sold for meat or sent to slaughter. Additionally, the use of hormones and antibiotics to boost milk production can pose risks to both the animals and humans. You may say…”likhin humare ghar mein aisa nehi hai!”. Think about your ghar x billions of Indians. It isn’t possible to have milk sourced ethically to everyone. So if there is demand, it has to be industrialised – and who suffers? The cow. But can the cow at home even be deemed ethical? We are taking milk which is for her baby from her. Making her fall pregnant again and again. And the bottom line is that we are not baby cows, we do not need the milk of a cow. The only milk a mammal needs is of its mother. Similarly we need our mother’s milk, and once we wean off it as children, we do not need milk anymore. There are so many other options available, which do not exploit any cows or buffalos 🐃 #Milk #India
