The Altadena neighborhood, devastated by the Eaton fire, hails one of the largest Black homeownership rates per capita in the state and is home to a proud and vibrant Black community. During the Civil Rights era, Altadena was one of the first and few communities offering housing and loans to Black Americans. Following the Fair Housing Act of 1968, Altadena’s Black community grew from 4% to 27% in 1970. Today, Black homeownership rate in Altadena stands at 81.5%, nearly double the national rate.
