Beverly Joubert Instagram – In the crisp, icy dawn, softened by swirling mist rising from a stream, this lone spotted hyena braved the cold water, wading to the other side where he’ll find refuge for the day when the temperature starts to climb. Hyenas are usually more active at cooler times of the day and prefer to do their hunting and prowling under the cover of darkness. Although they get much of the moisture they need from their prey, they’ll drink when fresh water is available. They also seem acutely aware that most plains game is water-dependent, so where there’s a river or stream, food is never far away.
