Beverly Joubert Instagram – A pair of honey-eyed cheetah cubs eagerly wait for their mom to return (hopefully with a meal). At this age, the youngsters have not yet developed the skills, strength or knowledge needed to defend themselves against rival predators. Their only source of protection is their mom and she must temporally abandon them in order to hunt leaving the cubs especially vulnerable. Like many other predators, the survival rate of cheetah cubs is low – some estimates suggest only about 10% of youngsters make it to adulthood. That’s bad news for a species that only numbers around 7,000 in the wild.⁣
