A backward gaze across the Kenyan plains. It’s a long, dangerous, and often brutal road to becoming a predatory ruler in these parts. From their very first year, male lions face the toughest of survival odds: Only about 1 in every 8 male cubs will make it to adulthood. Whether from rival carnivores, injuries, hunger, or even the threat of their own kind as incoming males attempt to take over prides, the dangers are unrelenting. Later, there are high-risk stretches of nomadic life when maturing lions are expelled from their natal pride to seek their own luck.
